Recovering from an inventory failure

How to recover from an inventory failure when you use IBM Storage Archive.

About this task

When a library cannot read the cartridge bar code for any reason, an inventory operation for the cartridge fails. The corresponding media folder does not display, but a specially designated folder, "UNKN0000," is listed instead. This designation indicates that a cartridge is not recognized by the library. If the user attempts to access the cartridge contents, the media folder is removed from the file system. The status of any library cartridge can be determined by using the leadm tape list command. For more information, see leadm tape list.
Attention: A cartridge requires a valid volume serial number (VOLSER) for the user to perform any operation. UNKN0000 is not a valid VOLSER, and operations to the cartridge such as leadm tape format UNKN0000 are not allowed. For more information, see Formatting a medium in the library.

Complete the following steps to recover from an inventory failure:

Procedure

  1. Export the unknown cartridge from the library by using the operator panel, or the tape library's web GUI, or by opening the door or magazine of the library.
  2. Check all cartridge bar code labels.
Note: If the bar code is removed or about to peel off, the library cannot read it. Replace or firmly attach the bar code to fix the problem.
  3. Insert the cartridge into the I/O station.
  4. Check to determine whether the cartridge is recognized by using the leadm tape list command.
  5. Add the cartridge to the IBM Storage Archive inventory by using the leadm tape assign <tapeID> command.
