Managing file save

How to manage file save with IBM Storage Archive Enterprise Edition.

File migration is used for space management. The following file system objects are not migrated to a tape by file migration:
  • Empty regular files
  • Symbolic links
  • Empty directories
You can save the file system objects by using one of the following commands:
  • eeadm save
  • mmapplypolicy (In conjunction with a save policy. See Manual save with the mmapplypolicy command.)

Even if the file system objects are saved to a tape, the objects remain in GPFS. The saved file system objects are not used by recall.

For the file system objects, the following information is stored in IBM Storage Archive EE so that they can be re-created at import:
  • GPFS path
  • GPFS metadata (but no file permissions and no time stamps) for the file
  • User-defined extended attributes.
Note: When a symbolic link is saved to a tape, the file save does not change the target of the symbolic link. When the symbolic link is restored from tape to GPFS, the target might not be valid if the path of the symbolic link is changed from the original location.
