Configure envelope parameters

By default, HIPAA X12 compliance checking, and therefore Type 6 validation, is disabled. You must configure Trading Partner Envelope parameters to activate validation. Use the SPE Trading Partner User Interface to selectively enable validation based on your requirements.

The following instructions assume that you have already defined the Interchange (ISA IEA), Functional Group (GS GE), and Transaction Set (ST SE) Envelopes that you intend to use for HIPAA X12 data and saved them in SPE. For each combination of direction, trading partner, and transaction set that you would like to enable:

  1. Select the Envelopes option from the Document Envelopes pull-down menu.
  2. For validation of Inbound data, open the envelope for the Functional Group (GS GE) by clicking on its Name.
  3. For Outbound data validation, open the envelope for the Transaction Set (ST SE) by clicking on its Name.
  4. Open the Advanced section and select Edit.
  5. Go to Step 2. Compliance and acknowledgement settings.
  6. Make sure that Perform HIPAA compliance check is set to Yes. This allows access to the additional compliance check settings.
  7. Under HIPAA Compliance settings, set Check Line of Service Rules (type 6) to Yes to enable Type 6 validation.
    1. Enabling Type 6 validation automatically enables validation for WEDI/SNIP Types 2 through 4.
    2. When Type 6 validation is enabled, the choices for Report type 6 as Errors or Warnings is displayed. The default setting will be Error.
Note: If this parameter is changed to Warnings then details about Type 6 exceptions will only be reported in the Translated Acknowledgment - not 999 acknowledgment. Make sure to set Generate Translated acknowledgment to Yes.
  8. Save your changes.
  9. Open the Versions section and confirm that the Envelope Version with your updated settings has been designated as the Default.
