Servers

View status and configuration information for the IBM Spectrum Protect servers that are managed by the Operations Center.

The table shows the hub server that is associated with the Operations Center. In a multiple-server environment, the following types of IBM Spectrum Protect servers can also be shown:
  • Servers that are defined to the hub server, but are not yet monitored
  • Servers that are connected as spoke servers, and are being monitored
The table does not show storage agents.

The following actions and status indicators are available on the page:

Alerts
In the Alerts summary, Server alerts identify server-related issues. Any issues regarding the server database, active log, or archive log are shown as Inventory alerts.
Back Up
IBM Spectrum Protect server database backups are usually scheduled. If a schedule fails, you can manually start a backup, which runs as a background process.
You must select one of the following backup types:
Full
Copies the entire contents of the database.
Dbsnapshot
Copies the entire contents of the database without interrupting the existing full and incremental backup series for the database.

If you select the option to specify a default device class, this setting applies for any future scheduled database backups.

To restore the database, the server uses information from the volume history and device configuration files. These files are automatically backed up after the database backup occurs.

Tip: To determine how much additional storage space a backup requires, issue the QUERY DB command.
Status
The following states can be shown:
  • Normal status icon Normal: There is sufficient space available for the server database, active log, and archive log.
  • Warning status icon Warning: The server database, active log, or archive log is running out of space. If this condition persists, you must add space.
  • Error status icon Critical: There is not enough space available for the server database, active log, or archive log. You must add space immediately, or the data protection services that are provided by the server will be interrupted.
  • Unmonitored status icon Unmonitored: Unmonitored servers are defined to the hub server, but have not been configured for management by the Operations Center. To configure an unmonitored server, select the server, and click Monitor Spoke.
  • Unavailable status icon Unavailable: Status cannot be obtained. Ensure that the IBM Spectrum Protect server is running, and that there are no network issues. This status is also shown if the monitoring administrator ID is locked or otherwise unavailable on the server. This ID is named IBM-OC-hub_server_name.
You can also look for related alerts on the Alerts page to help determine the cause of the problem.
Tip: If you use enterprise configuration to manage the monitoring administrator ID, a newly added spoke server is unavailable until the monitoring administrator ID is distributed in a profile update.
Status is determined by the monitoring thresholds that you define for the server. To modify the threshold settings, use the UPDATE STATUSTHRESHOLD command.
Database
The IBM Spectrum Protect database is a critical component of the IBM Spectrum Protect server. If the database is running out of space, you can create additional directories and add them to the database.
Active Log
The active log contains server transactions that are not yet committed to the database. If the active log runs out of space, any uncompleted transactions are rolled back to the last commit point and the server issues an error message and halts. If this occurs, you must increase the active log size before you can restart the server.
Archive Log
You can use the archive log to recover the IBM Spectrum Protect database. If the archive log is full or running out of space, run one or more full database backups to reduce the log size.

If the file systems or drives that contain the directories where the archive log and archive failover log are stored become full, the archive logs are stored in the active log directory. The logs are returned to the archive log directory when the space problem is resolved, or when a full database backup is run.

Last Database Backup
It is very important that you regularly back up the IBM Spectrum Protect database. If the database is lost and cannot be recovered, you might not be able to restore the data that is managed by the server.
