Troubleshooting processing errors for storage rules

If processing of a storage rule fails, you can obtain information in the Operations Center to help you diagnose and resolve the problem.

About this task

A storage rule runs once a day at a scheduled time, and can also be run on demand. When the storage rule runs, it starts a number of jobs to copy or move data according to the storage rule's defined action, such as Tier by subrule, Copy all data, or Copy retention sets. For tiering and copy storage rules, a separate job runs for each source pool that is defined by the storage rule and has eligible data to be processed. For retention-copy storage rules, a job is run for each retention set that has in-place data to be copied.

When the Storage Rules page shows an error status, you can hover over the status to display more information. If that information is not sufficient for you to diagnose and resolve the problem, you can open the storage rule's details notebook. From the details notebook, you can view the status for the individual jobs that were run by the storage rule. For tiering and copy storage rules, status is shown for each source pool that is defined for the storage rule. For retention-copy storage rules, status is shown for each retention set. You can view recent job history and view server messages that were written to the activity log for each job.

Procedure

The Status column of the Storage Rules page shows the result of the most recent run of each storage rule. If this column shows a Warning () or Failed () status, complete the following steps to diagnose the problem:

  1. In the Status column, hover over the status value.
Additional information about the error is displayed. If subrules are defined for the storage rule, separate status values are shown for the parent rule and its subrules.
  2. Select the storage rule, and click Details.
The details notebook for the storage rule is displayed. For tiering and copy storage rules, each source pool is listed on tabs of the details notebook. The individual job status for each source pool is shown.
  3. For tiering and copy storage rules, if the error you're investigating was reported for a subrule of the parent rule, click the Subrules tab and then click the subrule name.
  4. For tiering and copy storage rules or subrules, click the tab for the source pool whose job status you want to investigate. For retention-copy storage pools, click the Summary tab.
  5. To view the completion status for recent jobs, click Recent History.
  6. To view the server messages that were written to the activity log for a job, click View Job Activity.
An Activity Log window for the job is displayed, showing the server messages that were issued about the job.
  7. In the Activity Log window, examine any warning or error messages that were issued for the job. To obtain more information about a server message, hover over the message number in the activity log.
Documentation about the message is displayed. Depending on the message, this documentation might include a detailed explanation of the message and suggested actions that you can take to resolve errors.
