Migrating storage pool data

To maintain free space in primary storage pools, you can set capacity thresholds so that data automatically migrates to the next primary storage pool in the hierarchy. If an automated migration fails, you can manually start migration from the Operations Center.

About this task

The storage pool migration action moves data from a primary storage pool that you select to the next storage pool in the storage hierarchy.
Restriction: The storage pool migration action applies only to volume-based storage pools. You cannot migrate data from container storage pools, which use additional file system space or cloud storage space as needed. To move data from a volume-based pool to a directory-container pool or cloud-container pool, use the Convert action.

Procedure

To manually migrate storage pool data, complete the following steps:

  1. On the Storage Pools page of the Operations Center, select the primary storage pool from which you want to migrate data.
  2. Check whether a storage pool name is displayed in the Next Pool column of the table.
If a name is not displayed, assign a different primary storage pool to be the next pool in the hierarchy by completing the following steps:
    1. Click Details > Properties.
    2. On the storage-pool Properties page, if migration properties are not displayed, click the Migration tab.
    3. Click inside the Next pool field.
    4. From the list of primary storage pools that is displayed, select the storage pool that you want to assign as the next pool.
    5. Click Save.
    6. On the Storage Pools page of the Operations Center, select again the primary storage pool from which you want to migrate data.
  3. Click More > Migrate, and follow the instructions in the Migrate window.
