Diagnosing client errors
You can access client log files from the Operations Center and get recommendations about how to solve client errors.
Before you begin
Procedure
To diagnose client errors, complete the following steps:
- On the Clients page of the Operations Center, select the client.
- Click Details.
- On the client Summary page, click the Diagnosis tab.
- If an error message indicates that the client does not have a remote access URL or a
remote diagnostics URL specified, complete the following steps:
- Click the Properties tab.
- On the Properties page, open the General section.
- Specify the URL for accessing the client management service on the client system. The property
that you update to specify the URL depends on the version of the backup-archive client.
- If the client is running version 8.1.13 or later, use the Remote access URL property to access the client management service. In the Remote access URL field, enter the URL of the client management service that is configured on the client system. The URL must start with "https". The address includes the DNS host name or IP address of the client, and the port number that is defined on the client system for the IBM Spectrum Protect client management service. For example, https://client.mycorp.com:9081. If you omit the port number, the Operations Center uses the default port number, 9081.
- If the client is running version 8.1.12 or earlier, consider upgrading to the latest version. In
version 8.1.13, changes were made that were designed to simplify the installation of the client
management service. In version 8.1.12 and earlier, a separate package had to be installed, which
deployed an additional application server. In version 8.1.13, the client management service uses a
web server that is part of the client's installation package. To use the client management service,
you include the Client Web Server feature when you install the IBM Spectrum Protect client. For more information about installing the
client management service, see the IBM Spectrum Protect documentation.
If the client is running version 8.1.12 or earlier, but you do not want to upgrade to a later version, use the Remote diagnostics URL property to access the client management service. In the Remote diagnostics URL field, enter the URL of the client management service that is configured on the client system. The URL must start with "https". The address includes the DNS host name or IP address of the client, and the port number that is defined on the client system for the IBM Spectrum Protect client management service. For example, https://client.mycorp.com:9028. If you omit the port number, the Operations Center uses the default port number, 9028.
- Click Save.
- Click the Diagnosis tab.
-
The IBM Spectrum Protect client management service scans
the log files on the client, for log messages from the last 24 hours. If the log files are large,
the scan might take a number of minutes. The retrieved log messages are displayed in the
Client Logs pane on the Diagnosis page of the Operations
Center.
Tips:
- To show or hide the Client Logs pane, double-click the Client Logs bar.
- To resize the Client Logs pane, click and drag the Client Logs bar.
If recommendations are displayed on the Diagnosis page, select a recommendation.
In the Client Logs pane, client log messages to which the recommendation relates are highlighted.
- Consider the recommendations when you are resolving the
problems that are indicated by the error messages in
the client logs. Restriction: Recommendations are provided only for a subset of client messages.
