Viewing license capacity usage estimations

View capacity estimations to determine the used capacity that applies to licensed entitlements. Use this information as a guideline for current compliance and for future purchase planning.

About this task

The various Suite for Unified Recovery (SUR) licenses offer a bundle of IBM Spectrum Protect products with simplified pricing based on the capacity that is used to protect data.
The SUR licensing plans are based on either front-end capacity or back-end capacity, as follows:
  • Front-end capacity is the size of the primary data that is being protected for client applications, virtual machines, and systems. You pay for the capacity that is used for the data that would be recovered to restore the protected files to the latest recovery point. For file systems and IBM® Domino® databases, front-end capacity is the size of the active backup. For other applications, the front-end capacity is the storage that is used for the protected primary data of the application.
    Restriction: The reported front-end capacity measures active backups to determine the size of the protected data. If a client archives data and does not also back up that data, the capacity is not included in the front-end capacity measurement that is shown in the Operations Center. However, the size of the archived data must still be applied against your licensed entitlements. Refer to your license information for approved methods of measuring client data that is only archived.
  • Back-end capacity is the amount of used capacity in primary storage pools. By compressing or deduplicating data, you can reduce the size of the data so that less of your licensed capacity is used.
Important: The capacity estimates for SUR licenses are for planning purposes only. You can compare the information against your current license terms, and can check the estimates regularly to track growth trends for future purchase planning. If your current license is based on processor value units (PVUs), you can use this information to determine whether you might realize savings by purchasing a SUR license. However, be aware that the Operations Center shows estimates only. Refer to your license agreement for the approved methods of measuring SUR front-end or back-end capacity.

Procedure

To view license capacity estimations, complete the following steps:

  1. On the Operations Center menu bar, hover over the settings icon Globe icon, and click Licensing.
  2. Take one or more of the following actions:
    • If your license is based on front-end capacity, click the Front-end tab.
    • If your license is based on back-end capacity, click the Back-end tab.
