Accepting and rejecting cluster membership into the federation cluster

Before a cluster is a member of the federation cluster, it is considered a lone cluster. Once it has joined the federation cluster, it is called a member cluster (that is, it is now a member of the federation cluster). A multicluster administrator, or a user with the SMC_CLUSTER_VIEW or SMC_CLUSTER_CONTROL permission must explicitly authorize a cluster to join the federation cluster, before it can be a member of the federation cluster and take advantage of multicluster features. You can accept or reject a cluster's request to join the federation cluster.

Before you begin

Before you authorize a cluster to join, first enable the multicluster proxy in the cluster so that the proxy registers with the primary cluster. You can then see the clusters in the multicluster management console. For details on enabling the multicluster proxy in the cluster, refer to Enabling the multicluster proxy service.

About this task

Clusters that are requesting to join the federation cluster can be found on the Federation Waiting List page of the multicluster management console. You can choose to accept or reject a cluster's request to join the federation cluster.

Procedure

  1. From the multicluster management console, click Resources > Federation Cluster > Waiting List.
  2. Accept or reject the cluster's request to join the federation cluster:
    • To accept a cluster's request to join the federation cluster, click the green check mark next to the cluster on the federation waiting list.
    • To reject a cluster's request to join the federation cluster, click the red X icon next to the cluster on the federation waiting list.
  3. Confirm your action:
    • To confirm that you accept the join request, click Join.
    • To confirm that you reject the join request, click Reject.

Results

If you accepted the join request, the cluster name now appears under Resources > Federation Cluster > Members, indicating that it is now member cluster that is participating (or has joined) the federation cluster. If you reject the join request, the cluster does not join the federation cluster, is removed from the federation waiting list, and remains as a lone cluster.
