Upgrading the Windows Server operating system of the IBM Spectrum Control server

About this task

The following steps help you to upgrade the Windows Server operating system where IBM Spectrum Control 5.4.10.2 or later is installed. You can upgrade operating systems from Windows 2016 to Windows 2019, and from Windows 2019 to Windows 2022. The steps include stopping the services, resolving potential upgrade issues, and verifying the health of the Db2 instance and IBM Spectrum Control software.
Important: Take a full system backup or VM snapshot backup of the IBM Spectrum Control server and read all the steps before you start the upgrade process.

Procedure

  1. Prepare the system for operating system upgrade.
    1. Login to the Windows Server with administrator privileges.
    2. Stop the services of the IBM Spectrum Control server. For more information, see Stopping the IBM Spectrum Control servers by using scripts.
    3. Open the Db2 command window, and run the following command to stop the Db2 instance:
      db2stop
  2. Make sure to take the backup of the system before you proceed to operating system upgrade.
  3. Follow the Windows operating system upgrade steps from Microsoft official documentation, see Overview of Windows Server upgrades.
    After the successful operating system upgrade, verify that the system is up and running.
  4. After successful operating system upgrade, check that Db2 instance is active and running.
  5. If the Db2 instance is not active and running, open the Db2 command window, and run the following command:
    db2start
  6. Open the IBM Spectrum Control GUI and verify the status of all the components.
  7. Installed IBM Spectrum Control version 5.4.10.2 can now be upgraded to the latest version by following IBM Spectrum Control upgrade process. For more information, see Upgrading and migrating.
