Configuring multifactor authentication

To prove your identity, multifactor authentication requires you to provide multiple pieces of information when you log in to IBM Spectrum® Control. Multifactor authentication uses any combination of two or more methods, called factors, to authenticate users to your resources and protect those resources from unauthorized access.

Enhancing the security around user access is an important part of protecting your network and applications against unwanted intrusions. In an unparalleled time of global connectivity and proliferation of IoT devices into every aspect of business, the threat of cybercrimes is ever present. Organizations must safeguard their applications -- and metadata -- diligently, defending against breaches that can harm operations. To help provide an extra layer of protection and reduce your security risks, you can use multifactor authentication to control user access in IBM Spectrum Control.

With the adoption of cloud-based services, multifactor authentication increases the control over user access to IBM Spectrum Control. First-factor authentication methods alone, such as username and password combinations, do not provide the level of protection and security that is required in today's complex environments. With multifactor authentication support, security and IBM Spectrum Control administrators can reinforce account protection and monitor access more efficiently at a high level.

How it works

To provide multifactor authentication, IBM Spectrum Control integrates with IBM Security Verify, a cloud-based identity and access management (IAM) service provider. This service provides different factors to validate and verify users. An Administrator within IBM Spectrum Control configures this integration. Then, when other users log in to IBM Spectrum Control, they must enter a username and password and a second form of identification that is requested by IBM Security Verify.

How to configure multifactor authentication

To configure multifactor authentication for IBM Spectrum Control, complete the following steps:
  • Configure IBM Security Verify for use with IBM Spectrum Control.
  • Add IBM Spectrum Control users to IBM Security Verify.
  • (IBM Spectrum Control administrator) Enable multifactor authentication in IBM Spectrum Control.
  • (All IBM Spectrum Control users) Select the authentication factors that you want to use.
