Backup and restore requirements
IBM® Software Hub supports several methods for backing up and restoring your installation. Before you install IBM Software Hub, ensure that you identify the backup and restore method that you want to use so that you can install the required software on your cluster.
- NFS
- Amazon Elastic Block Store
- Amazon Elastic File System
The storage that you use and the services that you install determine which backup strategies you can use.
Before you choose a backup strategy, ensure that you review the following information:
Online backup
Online backups occur simultaneously with normal runtime operations. Users and external operations can continue to use IBM Software Hub during an online backup with minimal disruption.
IBM Software Hub supports the following online backup strategies:
- Back up and restore to the same cluster:
- To the same namespace
- To a different namespace
Tech preview This is a technology preview and is not supported for use in production environments.
- Back up and restore to a different cluster:
- To the same namespace
- To a different namespace

Use the following table to determine which online backup strategies are supported based on the persistent storage that you plan to use:
| Persistent storage |
Same cluster,

Offline backup
Offline backups occur when runtime operations are suspended. During an offline backup, IBM Software Hub services are quiesced bring them to a consistent state. Users and external operations cannot use IBM Software Hub during an offline backup.
IBM Software Hub supports the following backup strategies:
- Back up and restore to the same cluster
- Back up and restore to a different cluster
Use the following table to determine which offline backup strategies are supported based on the persistent storage that you plan to use:

Review the system requirements for the OpenShift API for Data Protection.
OpenShift API for Data Protection
If you plan to use the IBM Software Hub OpenShift API for Data Protection backup and restore utility (OADP) for online backups or offline backups, you must install the following software:
- OADP
-
You must install OADP on your cluster.
The required version of OADP depends on the version of Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform that you are running:
OpenShift Container Platform Version OADP Version Version 4.16 Version 1.4 Version 4.18 Version 1.4 Version 4.19 Version 1.5 Version 4.20 Version 1.5 Version 4.21 Version 1.5 - S3-compatible object storage
-
You must have S3-compatible object storage where you can store your backups. It is strongly recommended that you use storage that is outside of your cluster.
You can use the following S3-compatible object storage:
- Amazon S3
- IBM Cloud Object Storage
- MinIO
- Ceph® Object Gateway
IBM Fusion backup and restore service
