Getting started with Decision Optimization

Use Decision Optimization to build, solve and deploy prescriptive models to help you make decisions that maximize or minimize business objectives. Decision Optimization uses industry-leading mathematical programming and constraint programming solution engines to provide optimal solutions that satisfy your business constraints.

With Decision Optimization an operational research expert, data scientist, or AI expert can build models in any domain. You can create, import, edit, and solve these models to decide what actions to take in any domain. For example, you can use Decision Optimization to:
  • Determine the location and capacity of warehouses
  • Decide which plant should manufacture which product and the production quantities
  • Build financial portfolios that balance risks and rewards
  • Allocate aircraft and crew to flights

You can use Decision Optimization to increase profits, to reduce costs or time, to plan and schedule. Decision Optimization engines can find solutions to problems that have thousands or millions of different possibilities. You can be sure that the prescribed Decision Optimization solution is mathematically proven to be the best to achieve your objective. With the Decision Optimization user interface you can prepare data, build and run models, visualize solutions and explore multiple scenarios. You can use also Decision Optimization to deploy Decision Optimization models in Watson Machine Learning to create business applications.

Checking whether the service is installed

An administrator must install Decision Optimization.

To check whether the service is installed:

  1. From the navigation menu, select Services > Services catalog.
  2. Search for Decision Optimization.

If the service is installed and ready to use, the tile in the catalog shows Ready to use.

Accessing the service

Cloud Pak for Data watsonx™ Depending on the other services that are installed, Decision Optimization is available from either of the IBM Cloud Pak for Data experience or the IBM watsonx experience.

From the navigation menu, select Projects > All projects. Open your project or create a new one.

From within a project, click the Assets tab.

Click New asset > Solve Optimization problems in the Work with models section.
