Installing prerequisite software

Several services have prerequisite software that must be installed on the cluster by a cluster administrator.

Who needs to complete this task?

Cluster administrator A cluster administrator must install the prerequisite software on the cluster.

When do you need to complete this task?

Complete the appropriate tasks if you plan to install any of the services that need the prerequisite software.

One-time setup You must complete this task before you install the services. If you plan to run a batch installation, you must complete this task before you install IBM Software Hub.

About this task

The prerequisite software that you must install depend on the services that you plan to install. Use the following table to determine which prerequisite software you need to install:

Service Prerequisite software
IBM Knowledge Catalog Premium The following software is required if you plan to run models on local GPU:
  • NVIDIA GPU Operator
  • Node Feature Discovery Operator
  • Red Hat® OpenShift® AI

The software is not required if you plan to run models on CPU (supported for a subset of generative AI features) or a remote instance of watsonx.ai™.
IBM Knowledge Catalog Standard The following software is required if you plan to run models on local GPU:
  • NVIDIA GPU Operator
  • Node Feature Discovery Operator
  • Red Hat OpenShift AI

The software is not required if you plan to run models on CPU (supported for a subset of generative AI features) or a remote instance of watsonx.ai.
Watson Discovery To install this service, you must install the following software:
  • Multicloud Object Gateway
Watson Machine Learning The following software is required only if you plan to use deep learning or machine learning models that require GPU:
  • NVIDIA GPU Operator
  • Node Feature Discovery Operator
Watson Speech services To install this service, you must install the following software:
  • Multicloud Object Gateway

The following software is required only if you plan to enable enrichment:

  • NVIDIA GPU Operator
  • Node Feature Discovery Operator
  • Red Hat OpenShift AI
Watson Studio Runtimes The following software is required only if you plan to use runtimes that require GPU:
  • NVIDIA GPU Operator
  • Node Feature Discovery Operator
watsonx.ai To install this service, you must install the following software:
  • NVIDIA GPU Operator
  • Node Feature Discovery Operator
  • Red Hat OpenShift AI
watsonx Assistant To install this service, you must install the following software:
  • Multicloud Object Gateway
  • Red Hat OpenShift Serverless Knative Eventing

If you plan to use conversational skills or conversational search features, you must install the following software:

watsonx™ BI To install this service, you must install the following software:

watsonx.data™ The following software is required only if you plan to use Milvus indexes that require GPU:

watsonx.data Premium To install this service, you must install the following software:

  • Red Hat OpenShift AI
watsonx.data integration The following software is required if you plan to enable the Unstructured Data Integration feature (enableUnstructuredDataIntegration: true)
  • NVIDIA GPU Operator

  • Red Hat OpenShift AI
watsonx.data intelligence The following software is required if you plan to run models on local GPU or if you plan to enable the Unstructured Data Integration feature (enableUnstructuredDataIntegration: true):
  • NVIDIA GPU Operator
  • Node Feature Discovery Operator
  • Red Hat OpenShift AI

The software is not required if you plan to run models on CPU (supported for a subset of generative AI features) or a remote instance of watsonx.ai.
watsonx Orchestrate If you plan to use the agentic_assistant mode, you must install the following software:
  • Multicloud Object Gateway
  • Red Hat OpenShift Serverless Knative Eventing

The preceding software is not required if you plan to use the agentic mode.

In addition, the following software is required if you plan to run models on local GPU:

  • NVIDIA GPU Operator
  • Node Feature Discovery Operator
  • Red Hat OpenShift AI

The preceding software is not required if you plan to use the AI gateway to access models that are hosted on a remote environment.
