Getting started with Cognos Analytics

With Cognos Analytics, you can implement business analytics (BI).

The IBM Cognos Analytics application integrates data preparation, analysis, presentation, reporting, and more.

Cognos Analytics has multiple offerings that provide you with different components, features, data sources, and documentation.

Data samples are available in your Cognos Analytics offerings or you can upload your own data files.

Explore is a flexible workspace for discovering and analyzing data.

Dashboards, stories, and reports enable you to present and share results and insights of data analysis with various visualizations, such as graphs, charts, maps, and other visual representations of data.

Notebook documents can be created and edited after enabling Cognos Analytics for Jupyter Notebook in your Cognos Analytics.

Other Cognos products can be integrated with Cognos Analytics.

Checking whether the service is installed

An administrator must install Cognos Analytics.

To check whether the service is installed:

  1. From the navigation menu, select Services > Services catalog.
  2. Search for Cognos Analytics.

If the service is installed and ready to use, the tile in the catalog shows Ready to use.

If the service is installed but no service instances have been created, the tile in the catalog shows Ready to provision.

Important: Even if the service is Ready to use, you must be added to a service instance to use the service.

Accessing the service

Pop-out Cognos Analytics is a pop-out service. You can access the service from the Service > Service instances page.
Restriction: The Service > Service instances page is not available in the IBM Software Hub experience. If you are logged in as an IBM Software Hub administrator, you must switch to a different experience before you can access the page.

To open Cognos Analytics from IBM Software Hub, complete the following steps:

  1. From the Service > Service instances page, locate the cognos-analytics-app instance.
  2. From the action menu for the instance, click Open.

    Cognos Analytics opens in a separate browser tab for you to use.
