Configuring a smart host for an on-premises Exchange server

Before you migrate mail using the Mail Onboarding Manager, configure two smart hosts -- one in the cloud, and one on premises. This ensures that mail delivery transitions from on-premises to the cloud smoothly, and that mail is no longer delivered on-premises once the migration has occurred. Migration includes new mail and calendar entries that occur during migration. However, it does not include modifications to those entries during the migration period.

Before you begin

To configure a smart host in the cloud, complete the task Configure a smart host in SmartCloud Notes Administration. You can actually do this either before or after you set up a smart host for your Microsoft Exchange server. It is listed here as a reminder.

About this task

Smart hosts allow two or more mail systems to share the same Internet domain. If the SmartCloud Notes mail router doesn't find the recipient's name in the SmartCloud Notes mail directory, then it routes the mail to the recipient in the on-premises mail system via the SMTP smart host. Similarly, if the on-premises mail router doesn't find the recipient's name in the on-premises mail directory, then it routes the mail to the recipient in SmartCloud Notes. This ensures full mail interoperability between SmartCloud Notes and the on-premises mail system during your migration.

To configure a smart host for your on-premises Exchange server, you first create a Send connector. Next you configure the accepted domain properties for any SMTP domains used to accept incoming messages for your Exchange server. When you create your Send connector, for the field Fully Qualified Domain Name, specify the SMTP address for the data center for your organization:
  • If you use the North American data center, specify smtp.notes.na.collabserv.com
  • If you use the Asia Pacific data center, specify smtp.notes.ap.collabserv.com
  • If you use the European data center, specify smtp.notes.ce.collabserv.com

The steps to configure a smart host for an Exchange server differ depending on the version of Exchange server. These steps link to the most up-to-date information in the Microsoft Exchange library.

Procedure

  1. Create an SMTP Send connector:
  2. Configure an accepted domain as an internal relay domain for your SMTP server:

What to do next

Complete the task Verifying smart host configuration for the Mail Onboarding Manager.
Note: Verification cannot complete unless you have configured a smart host in SmartCloud Notes Administration as recommended in the "Before you begin" section of this topic.
