Configuring carrier services

A carrier service is a service that defines delivery details. For example, next-day ground shipping. You can create, view, edit and delete carrier services. You can also associate one or more carrier services with carriers and shipping groups.

Procedure

  1. From the menu, click Configuration > Carriers to display the Carriers list page.
  2. To create a carrier service, complete one of the following steps:
    • From the Actions menu, click Create carrier service.
    • From the Carriers list, select the Carrier ID and expand the ellipsis for this row. Then, click Create carrier service.
To edit a carrier service, click Edit carrier service.
To delete a carrier service, click Delete carrier service.
By default, carrier services are activated and are considered for fulfillment at all nodes.
  3. Optional: From the Select carrier list, select the carrier that the carrier service is associated with.
Each carrier service can be associated with more than one carrier.
Complete this step only if you choose to create a carrier service from the Actions menu.
  4. In the Carrier service name field, enter the name of the carrier service.
The Carrier service name is limited to 100 characters.
  5. In the Carrier service ID field, enter the carrier service identifier.
The Carrier service ID is limited to 40 characters. You cannot use spaces for the identifier.
  6. Optional: From the Add to shipping groups list, select existing shipping groups to add the carrier service to the specified shipping group.
  7. In the Dimension factor field, enter the carrier-defined weight calculation.
The dimension factor is based on the size of the package rather than its actual weight. Each carrier service uses a different dimension factor, and the carrier service must be consulted to determine the proper dimension factor to be used.
Important: The dimensional weight factor unit of measure is based on the system of measure that is used in the operating country. You can also define multiple units of measure. During a fulfillment estimate, Sterling Intelligent Promising chooses the correct unit of measure based on the defined system unit of measure. Dimension weight is a key value that is used to evaluate shipping weight based on the shipping dimension and weight of the item.
You can input the Volume threshold, which uses the unit of measure that is equivalent to the Dimension factor.

Input Volume threshold. The Volume threshold is considered during cost optimization. If the volume of the package exceeds the Volume threshold, then shipping charges are applied according to either the dimensional weight or the physical weight of the package, whichever is greater. Otherwise, the shipping charges are applied according to the physical weight of the package.

  8. In the Weight limit field, enter the maximum weight limit for the carrier service.
The Weight limit helps ensure that the shipping weight does not exceed the carrier weight limit. The correct unit of measure is selected based on the system default unit of measure that you defined.
  9. In the Default transit time field, enter the estimated transit time for the carrier service to deliver, based on the service level agreement.
  10. In the Delivery speed factor field, enter the adjustment factor to apply to achieve faster deliveries.
  11. Complete one of the following steps:
    • To save the carrier service without surcharges, click Save.
    • To continue and to create surcharges, click Next.

Adding or deleting a charge tier

  1. To add a charge tier to an existing surcharge, in the Charge tier 1 or the Charge tier 2 section, select the surcharge to which you want to apply a charge tier 1. Then, click Add charge tier, and click Confirm.
  2. Click Save .
  3. To delete a charge tier 1 or 2, click Delete charge tier 1 or Delete charge tier 2 and click Save.

Editing, deleting, and creating a surcharge

  1. To edit an existing surcharge, select the surcharge and click the Pencil icon. Then, after you update the surcharge, click Save.
  2. To delete or to move a surcharge, select the surcharge and click Delete or click Move to charge tier 2.
  3. To create a surcharge, click Create surcharge.
  4. In the Create surcharge for charge tier 1 dialog, complete the following steps:
    1. From the Calculation type drop-down list, select the type of surcharge.
    2. Enter the Surcharge amount.
    3. Add a description for the surcharge.
    4. From the Charge scope drop-down list, select the charge scope. Then, click Save.
    5. For the Fixed calculation type of surcharge only, from the Currency drop-down list, select the currency.

By default, carrier services are activated and are considered for fulfillment at all nodes. To deactivate carrier services at specific nodes, see Configuring nodes.

In addition to managing carrier services through the user interface (UI), you can also use the Carrier Service APIs.

What to do next

To view the carrier service details, including the charge tiers and surcharges, from the Carriers list page, expand the Carrier ID row and click the Carrier service ID.

To edit a carrier service, expand the carrier row to select the Carrier service ID, click the ellipsis menu and click Edit carrier service. After editing, click Next and then click Confirm.

To delete a carrier service, expand the Carrier ID row and select a Carrier service ID. Then, click Delete carrier service.

To add a carrier service to a shipping group, in the Carriers list page, expand the Carrier ID row and select a Carrier service ID. Then, click Add to shipping group.

For more information about disabling a carrier service for a shipping group by using the Carrier services user interface, see Configuring shipping groups.

To configure transit details, select the Transit details tab and select the filters to apply.

To assign a carrier calendar, for more information see, Configuring carrier calendar and constraints.

For more information about deactivating a carrier service at a node so that the node does not consider the carrier service to fulfill orders, see Activating and deactivating shipping groups at a node.
