Upgrading IBM Storage Fusion HCI System

As an administrator user, upgrade components of IBM Storage Fusion HCI System from 2.7.2 to 2.8.0 or 2.8.0 to 2.8.2 or 2.8.1 to 2.8.2. The IBM Storage Fusion HCI System upgrade involves software and firmware.

Before you begin

  • Go through the prerequisites before you upgrade. For more information about the prerequisites, see Prerequisites.
  • Go through the following considerations that impact the IBM Storage Fusion HCI System upgrade procedure:
    • The IBM Storage Fusion HCI System does automatic prechecks during upgrade to help you detect and fix errors. Go through the automated prechecks for better planning. For more information about the prechecks, see Prechecks.
    • Follow the sequence mentioned in the procedure of this topic. Wait for each step to complete before you begin the next step in sequence.
    • Service upgrades are mandatory after the IBM Storage Fusion HCI System software upgrades.

About this task

The high-level steps to upgrade IBM Storage Fusion HCI System:
  1. Upgrade IBM Storage Fusion HCI System software to the most recent version.
  2. Upgrade all services in the specified sequence.
  3. Upgrade Red Hat® OpenShift® Container Platform.
The procedure ensures that IBM Storage Fusion HCI System is brought up to the most recent version.
Note: Follow the sequence mentioned in this procedure.

Procedure

  1. Upgrade IBM Storage Fusion HCI System management software.

  2. Upgrade the storage service. For more information about upgrade, see Upgrading IBM Storage Fusion HCI System services.

  4. Upgrade the Data Cataloging service. For more information about the steps to upgrade, see Upgrading IBM Storage Fusion HCI System services.
  5. Optionally, if you want to upgrade OpenShift Container Platform, see OpenShift Container Platform upgrade. For more information about Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform, see product documentation Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform or Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform.
    Note:
    • You can upgrade Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform to the supported 4.15 version. However, you cannot enable Data Cataloging service in an upgraded IBM Storage Fusion HCI System 2.8.0 with Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform 4.15.

What to do next

  • For all the backup and restore jobs to be successful post upgrade, run the following commands to delete Kafka and Apache Zookeeper pods:
    
    oc delete pod baas-kafka-0 -n baas
    oc delete pod baas-zookeeper-0 -n baas
    oc delete pod baas-zookeeper-1 -n baas
    oc delete pod baas-zookeeper-2 -n baas

    After you run these commands, wait for the pods to restart.
