OpenShift Container Platform upgrade prerequisites

Make sure you meet the prerequisites and understand the limitations before proceed with the OpenShift® Container Platform upgrade.

  • Check the compatibility of your underlying storage before you proceed with the OpenShift Container Platform upgrade. For more information about the storage version support, see Storage version support matrix.
  • Backup & Restore 2.8.1 is not supported on OpenShift Container Platform 4.16.
  • Global Data Platform 5.2.0.1 in IBM Storage Fusion 2.8.1 is not supported on OpenShift Container Platform 4.16.
  • Important: In IBM Storage Fusion 2.8.1, if you use Global Data Platform as a storage type, then make sure that you do not upgrade OpenShift Container Platform to the following versions:
    • Do not upgrade OpenShift Container Platform to 4.13.42 or a higher version.
    • Do not upgrade OpenShift Container Platform to 4.14.25 or a higher version.
    • Do not upgrade OpenShift Container Platform to 4.15.13 or a higher version.
If you need to upgrade to a higher version of OpenShift Container Platform in 2.8.0, then apply the hotfix for the Global Data Platform to work. For more details about the hotfix, see Hotfixes. This hotfix is not applicable for IBM Storage Fusion HCI System 2.8.1.
  • If you want to continue to use Global Data Platform 5.1.9.x, then you can upgrade IBM Storage Fusion HCI System to 2.8.0 but must not upgrade OpenShift Container Platform from version 4.12.

Ensure you do not upgrade Global Data Platform without upgrading OpenShift Container Platform first. You can upgrade other services on IBM Storage Fusion HCI System 2.8.0 with OpenShift Container Platform 4.12.

  • For the complete support matrix of Global Data Platform with OpenShift Container Platform on IBM Storage Fusion HCI System 2.8.0 and 2.8.1, see Storage version support matrix.
  • In IBM Storage Fusion HCI System 2.8.0, if you upgrade to OpenShift Container Platform version 4.15, then you cannot use Data Cataloging service.
  • In 2.8.1, if you plan to use Fusion Data Foundation 4.16, then you must upgrade to OpenShift Container Platform 4.16. For OpenShift Container Platform upgrade, follow this upgrade sequence: 4.12.54 > 4.13.44 > 4.14.20 > 4.15.20 > 4.16.0.
  • IBM Storage Fusion HCI System 2.8.0 supports OpenShift Container Platform 4.12, 4.14, and 4.15.
  • After you check the storage support matrix and install the Hotfix, do OpenShift Container Platform upgrade in the following sequence: 4.12.54 > 4.13.44 > 4.14.20 > 4.15.20
  • If you must work with Hosted Control Plane clusters or Hosted Control Plane with Fusion Data Foundation, then upgrade OpenShift Container Platform to 4.15.x or 4.14.x after the upgrade of IBM Storage Fusion and services to 2.8.1. Otherwise, this upgrade is optional.
  • Common prerequisites:
    • After every OpenShift Container Platform upgrade, check whether you have an installation of OpenShift virtualization operator. If it is available, then upgrade it. For more information, see Updating OpenShift Virtualization.
    • If you are using an offline method, see the following Updating a cluster in a disconnected environment topics based on your version of OpenShift Container Platform:
    • Verify whether all services and OpenShift Container Platform are healthy.
    • Both high speed switches must be available, functional, and healthy.
    • Note: Review the supported and allowed upgrade path on OpenShift Container Platform upgrade graph tool. Do this to avoid the upgrade to a version that does not have any further upgrade paths due to unavailability of stable channels. For more information about upgrade version details, see Red Hat Documentation.
    • Run the upgrade precheck script before you begin the upgrade of OpenShift Container Platform. For more information about the upgrade precheck script, see Precheck script.
