Removing and replacing the power supply unit

Remove the existing power supply unit of the server and replace it with a new one.

Before you begin

Prerequisites for removing the power supply unit
  • The server is shipped with two power supply by default. In this case, the power supply is hot pluggable and redundant.
  • Ensure that you power off the server and disconnect all the power cords and network cables before you remove the power supply unit.
  • Ensure that you put the node into maintenance mode. For more about node maintenance, see Administering the node.
  • Ensure that you install an additional hot-swap power supply to support redundancy.
  • Ensure that you wear an ESD wrist strap when you remove the power supply unit.
  • Ensure that you handle the component carefully and include more than one qualified person to perform the task if the component weight is more than 18 kg (40 lb).

  • Ensure that you power off the server and disconnect all the power cords and network cables before you replace the power supply unit.

  • Ensure that you install an additional hot-swap power supply to support redundancy.
  • Ensure that you wear an ESD wrist strap when you replace the power supply unit.
  • Ensure that you handle the component carefully and include more than one qualified person to perform the task if the component weight is more than 18 kg (40 lb).

About this task

Procedure

  1. Remove the power supply unit as follows:
    1. Disconnect the power cord from the hot-swap power supply and the electrical outlet.
    2. Slide the release tab toward the handle and carefully pull the handle backwards at the same time to remove the hot-swap power supply out of the chassis.
  2. Replace the power supply unit as follows:
    1. Take the new part out of the package and place it on a static-protective surface.
    2. Remove the power supply filler if it is installed.
    3. Place the new hot-swap power supply into the bay and push until it gets into position.
    4. Connect the power supply unit to a properly grounded electrical outlet.

What to do next

  1. Install a power supply filler or a new power supply to cover the slot.
  2. If you are instructed to return an old hot-swap power supply, follow all packaging instructions and use any packaging materials provided.
  3. If the server is turned off, turn on the server. Ensure that both the power input LED and the power output LED on the power supply are lit, indicating that the power supply is operating properly.
