Getting started with IBM Security Verify

You just submitted the form for an application that you want to use and that application uses IBM® Security Verify for login and access control. What do you do next?

About this task

How you actually get started depends on the requirements that the tenant administrator set up.

The following actions are what you typically might encounter.

After your account is created, you receive an email for your initial login.

Procedure

  1. Open the email and click the link to the sign-on page.
  2. Select your identity provider from the Sign in another way menu. Typically, it is Cloud Directory.
  3. Enter the username that you specified in your application, the temporary password that you received in the email and click Sign in.
  4. Create a password and click Change Password.

Results

You are logged in to your My apps page.

Setting up multi-factor authentication methods

To protect you and your data, applications often require second factor authentication. The application wants to make sure that you are the actual person that is logging in. You can use various methods for second factor authentication. Typically the more common methods are email and text messaging. You can set up either one or both of these methods for second factor authentication. It is probably a good idea to set up both so that you have a backup method.

Procedure

  1. Open you profile menu by clicking the circular icon in the toolbar. Typically the icon has your initials.
  2. From your profile menu, click Profile & settings.
  3. From your Profile page, click Security.
  4. Perform second factor authentication.
Since you didn't set up any authentication factors yet, a passcode is sent to your email address that is associated with your Verify account.
  5. Enter the passcode and click Submit.
You authenticated and are back on your Profile & settings page Security tab. You can now add your authentication methods.

Setting up your email as a second factor authentication method

You can use the same email address that is associated with your Verify account or you can use a different email address for your second factor authentication method.

Procedure

  1. Click Add new method.
  2. Click New email.
  3. Enter the email address in the correct format.
For example, johndoe@myco.com. Include the @ and period in the address.
  4. Click Send access code.
  5. Enter the access code that you received in the email.
You might need to type the access code instead of cutting and pasting the code.
  6. Click Verify > Done.

Setting up text messaging as a second factor authentication method

You must have a mobile device that can send and receive text messages.

Procedure

  1. Click Add new method.
  2. Click New number.
  3. Ensure that the correct country code is selected.
  4. Enter your mobile phone number and area code without any spaces.
    For example, enter (123) 456-7890 as 1234567890.
  5. Click Send access code.
  6. Enter the access code that you received on your mobile device.
  7. Click Verify > Done.

Results

If you are required to perform second factor authentication, you can choose to receive the access code either as an email or a text message.
