Entitlements, license metrics, and usage tracking
The entitlement, license metrics, and usage tracking for each secure file transfer edition is as below.
Secure File Transfer Container Edition
- Sterling File Gateway Container Edition
- Sterling Connect: Direct Container Edition
- Sterling Connect: Direct Solo Edition
- Sterling Secure Proxy Container Edition
- Sterling Control Center Monitor
- Sterling Control Center Director
Sterling Connect: Direct Solo Edition is only allowed to communicate with Sterling File Gateway or Sterling Connect: Direct purchased as part of Secure File Transfer.
The other supporting programs such as Sterling Secure Proxy, Sterling Control Center Director and Sterling Control Center Monitor supports anything inside the SFT bundle. Any IBM products or services purchased outside SFT can’t utilize these supporting programs.
The unit of measurement is for the highest value of VPC of Sterling File Gateway or Sterling Connect: Direct. Example; SFG container has 10 VPCs and CD Container has 2 instances of 4 VPCs each. In this case, 10 VPCs > 8 VPCs and the total number of VPCs for license is 10 VPCs.
IBM License service is the standard tool to measure license usage for IBM software containers. It collects and measures the license usage of your product at the cluster level. The data can be retrieved upon request for monitoring and compliance and used as audit evidence.
Secure File Transfer Premium Edition
- Sterling File Gateway Financial Enterprise Edition
- Sterling Connect: Direct Premium Edition
- Sterling Connect: Direct Solo Edition
- Sterling Secure Proxy
- Sterling Control Center Monitor
- Sterling Control Center Director
Sterling Connect: Direct Solo Edition can only communicate with Sterling File Gateway or Sterling Connect: Direct Premium purchased as part of Secure File Transfer.
The other supporting programs such as Sterling Secure Proxy, Sterling Control Center Director and Sterling Control Center Monitor supports anything inside the SFT. Any IBM products or services purchased outside SFT can’t utilize these supporting programs.
The unit of measurement is for the highest value of PVU of Sterling File Gateway or Sterling Connect: Direct. Example; SFG has 280 PVUs and CD Premium has 2 instances of 70 PVUs each. In this case, 280 PVUs > 140 PVUs and the total number of PVUs for license is 280 PVUs.
IBM License Metric Tool (ILMT) is the standard tool to measure license usage for SFT Premium edition. For SFT Premium edition, ILMT can be used to track the license usage for Sterling File Gateway and Sterling Connect: Direct. It keeps track of which software programs are deployed on physical hardware setups. It provides reporting for customers, so they can present reports to IBM when it they are requested to demonstrate compliance around entitlement capacity. Optionally Sterling Control Centre Director can also be used to measure the license usage of Sterling Connect: Direct, but it can’t track the license for Sterling File Gateway.

The supporting programs such as Sterling Secure Proxy, Sterling Control Center Director and Sterling Control Center Monitor supports anything purchased as part of Secure File Transfer. Any IBM products or services purchased outside SFT can’t utilize these supporting programs.
The unit of measurement is the total number of connections established to Sterling File Gateway which includes inbound and outbound connections. Example; if the inbound connections are 5 and outbound connections are 4, the total number of licensed connections would be 9.
To measure the license usage of SFT Standard edition, total number of connections must be measured. Connections are determined by the total number of SFG partners configured in the system. Database queries can be used to validate the number of Connections in use.
