Starting the terminal recorder

Start the recorder in IBM RPA Studio and select the terminal driver to record applications through the terminal emulator. You can connect to 3270 host sessions with the IBM RPA internal provider, and to 3270 or 5250 host sessions with the HLLAPI and IBM® Personal Communications providers.

Before you begin

  • Your user needs permission to use IBM RPA Studio application. See the Checking user permissions topic to learn how to check your user permissions.
  • IBM RPA Studio's recorder supports connection with the following providers:
    • IBM RPA internal provider
    • IBM® Personal Communications
    • HLLAPI

The recorder doesn't support connections to terminal prompts through SSH or Telnet. For more information, see Connecting by using SSH and Connecting by using Telnet.

Each provider might have specific requirements that you must comply with before you start the terminal recorder. For more information, see Connecting by using HLLAPI, Connecting by using IBM® Personal Communications, and Connecting by using IBM RPA internal provider.

Procedure

Complete the following steps to activate the driver to record the terminal emulator:

  1. Log in to IBM RPA Studio.
  2. On the menu bar, click Home > Start Recorder. The recorder's menu bar appears after it loads its drivers.
  3. On the recorder's menu bar, click Start driver > Terminal, and select the provider: Internal TN3270 emulator, IBM® Personal Communications, or HLLAPI.

These providers prompt a dialog box so you can provide the credentials to connect to a terminal host. For more information about connection data, see Connecting by using HLLAPI, Connecting by using IBM® Personal Communications, and Connecting by using IBM RPA internal provider.

You can save the credentials to connect to a host session with these providers as the default credentials, which are used only by IBM RPA Studio. It tries to load them every time that you use the terminal recorder. You can also change them in IBM RPA Studio settings.

What to do next

Learn how to record screen data from the terminal emulator based on the actions that you take on it and how to inspect fields on it. For more information, see Recording actions on the terminal emulator and Inspecting fields with the recorder.
