Comparing configurations

Compare configurations to determine whether they contain different resources (identified by the URI or the name of a resource), or different versions of the same resources. For example, partway through a project, you might compare a stream with its flow target to see which resource versions are different. At the end of a project milestone, you might compare a stream with its base baseline.

Before you begin

  • Ensure that you are familiar with project areas, configuration spaces, baselines, streams, and change sets, which are described in Management of shared resources.
  • Ensure that you are logged in to a project, and that you are in a stream that is associated with the current configuration space.

About this task

This operation does not compare the actual contents of the resources. The contents of resources can be compared only in their native lifecycle management product.

Procedure

  1. Select an option and complete its associated steps:
    Option Description
    Compare a stream to its flow target (where changes are delivered to) or its base baseline
    1. On the toolbar of a lifecycle management product, click Configuration Management > Edit configuration_name.
    2. Click one of the following icons:
      • Compare with Base baseline (): The versions of resources in the stream are compared with the versions of resources in the base baseline of that stream.
      • Compare stream with flow target (): The versions of resources in the stream are compared with the versions of resources in the stream to which changes are delivered.
    Compare other configurations
    1. Open the Configuration Explorer view. On the toolbar of a lifecycle management product, click Configuration Management > Open Configuration Management.
    2. On the Welcome to Configurations page, click Explore configurations.
    3. In the Actions column, beside the names of the two configurations to compare, select the check box.
    4. Click the Compare icon () on the toolbar, which is near the upper-right corner.
  2. Follow the instructions in the Compare Configurations wizard. Use the navigation icons near the upper-right corner of the wizard pages to explore the differences in the configurations.

What to do next

To return to the Configuration Explorer view, click Finish.
