Creating prompt hierarchies
You can create a prompt hierarchy by using the Create New Prompt Hierarchy wizard.
About this task
Procedure
- From the main menu, select File > New > Other to open the Select a wizard page of the New wizard.
- Expand the QMF Objects folder, select Prompt Hierarchy, and click Next to open the Create New Prompt Hierarchy wizard.
- Specify a name for the prompt hierarchy in the Name field and click Finish to close the Create New Prompt Hierarchy wizard and open the Prompt Hierarchy editor.
- From the Data Source section of
the Prompt Hierarchy editor, select the source
of the data that you want to use for the prompt hierarchy. The data
source for a prompt hierarchy can be a visual query, analytical query, dynamart,
or compound dynamart.
- Select Linked, if you want to store a link to a data source object in the prompt hierarchy that you create. Then go to step 5.
- Select Embedded, if you want to save a data source within the prompt hierarchy that you create. Then go to step 6.
- If you selected Linked, click the
ellipsis (...) button that is next to the Resource field, and navigate to and select the required data source.
The path to the data source that you selected is displayed in the Resource field.
- If you selected Embedded, select
one of the following options:
- Click Import to navigate to and select the required data source object.
- Click New to create a data source query or dynamart for the prompt hierarchy.
- Click Edit to modify the query or dynamart that is already specified as the embedded data source for the prompt hierarchy.
- In the Hierarchy levels section, click Add Level to add levels to the prompt hierarchy.
- From the Hierarchy levels list,
select a level that you added and specify the following properties
for it:
- In the Level name field, specify the name that you want to use for the level.
- From the Display value list, select a column, which values are displayed when a user is prompted to enter the variable value.
- From the Return value field, select a column
that returns the variable value that corresponds to the display value.
For example, the "SALES" department has a department number of "10". The department name column is set as the display value, and the department number column is set as the return value. If the user enters SALES in the prompt, 10 is returned to the query.
- From the Order by list, select a column that you want to use for ordering query results.
- To change the position of the levels in the prompt hierarchy, select a level and click Move Level Up or Move Level Down.
- In the Prompt hierarchy preview section, click Refresh to preview the prompt hierarchy.
- When you finished adding levels to the prompt hierarchy, save it to a repository or file.
