Creating drill-down paths

Drill-down paths allow you to drill down into several different views of query results.

About this task

To create a drill-down path, perform the following procedure:

Procedure

  1. Open the Create New Drill-down Path wizard in one of the following ways:
    • With an active query in the editor window, select Query > Transfer To > Drill-down Path
    • Select File > New > Other

From the QMF Objects folder, select the Drill-down Path wizard

    • Click the New Drill-down Path toolbar button.

The Create New Drill-down Path wizard opens.

If you opened the Create New Drill-down Path wizard by selecting Query > Transfer To > Drill-down Path, the Chart Type page of the wizard opens.

Otherwise, the Create New Drill-down Path page opens and you must perform the following actions:
    • Specify a name for the drill-down path in the Name field
    • In the Data Source section, specify a query to use.

To use a saved in a repository or file query click ellipsis (...) right to the Saved query.

To use an opened query select one of the opened queries in the corresponding list box.

    • Click Next. The Chart Type page of the wizard opens.
  2. Specify chart type options and click Next.
    The Data Series page opens.
  3. Specify data series options and click Next.
    The Format page opens.
  4. Specify format options and click Finish.
The Create New Drill-down Path wizard closes and the first chart of the drill-down path is displayed in the Results editor.
  5. To add another level to the drill-down path, click one of the data points of the chart.
The New drill-down path node wizard opens.
  6. Specify chart type, data series, and chart format options and click OK.
The new chart is displayed in the Results editor. The chart that you create is automatically parameterized to accept data from the previous chart. For example, if the first chart displayed data values from a column of department names, the new chart will only display data values from a specific department.
  7. Repeat this process for every level of detail that you want to include in the drill-down path and click the Stop recording drill-down path toolbar button.
You are prompted to confirm that you want to stop recording the drill-down path.
  8. Click No to discard the recording.
All of the previous levels and charts are discarded.
  9. Click Yes to save the recording.
The drill-down path and all of its levels and charts are saved.
  10. Once the drill-down path is saved, navigate between charts using the Switch to the Previous Scene and Switch to the Next Scene toolbar buttons.
  11. To edit a specific chart, navigate to the chart and click the Drill-down path node properties toolbar button.
The Drill-down Level Properties window opens.
For more information about editing chart properties, see the following topics:
  12. Edit the chart properties that you want to change and click OK to save the changes and close the Drill-down Level Properties window.
  13. To record a new drill-down path using an existing chart as the base chart, navigate to the chart that you want to start with and click the Record drill-down path toolbar button.
The New drill-down path node wizard opens, allowing you to create a new chart level. The new drill-down path will start with the chart that was open when you clicked the toolbar button, and the new chart will be the next level down.
  14. To record a new branch of a drill-down path, navigate to the chart in the current drill-down path recording that you want to branch from and click the Branch out drill-down path and switch to the record mode toolbar button.
The Edit drill-down path node wizard opens, allowing you to change the next chart level down from where you clicked the toolbar button. This creates a new drill-down path recording that retains all of the previous chart levels from the start to the point at which you clicked the toolbar button, but allows you to record new chart levels that branch out from the original recording. The original saved recording is preserved.
