Embedding prompt hierarchies in queries

You can create an embedded prompt hierarchy to store it with a visual query, dynamart, analytical query, or compound dynamart.

Before you begin

Open a query to which you want to add an embedded prompt hierarchy on the Design tab of the query editor.

About this task

To create a prompt hierarchy and embed it in the query:

Procedure

  1. On the Design tab, in the Prompts pane, click the down arrow and select Create Embedded Prompt Hierarchy (Create Embedded Prompt Hierarchy button) to open the Create Embedded Prompt Hierarchy wizard.
  2. In the Prompt name field, specify the name that you want to use for the prompt hierarchy.
  3. In the Display string field, specify the text that you want to display when the query is run.
  4. Click Finish to close the Create Embedded Prompt Hierarchy wizard and open the Prompt Hierarchy editor.
  5. In the Prompt Hierarchy editor, create a prompt hierarchy and save it. For more information, see the Creating prompt hierarchies.
  6. Return on the Design tab of the query editor.
The prompt hierarchy that you created is embedded in the query and displayed in the Prompts pane.
  7. Assign prompt hierarchy levels to selected columns:
    • In a visual query or dynamart, assign the selected levels of the prompt hierarchy to the query columns:
      1. In the Prompt Assignments pane, select a column.

      2. Click the down arrow in the Prompt column to select the prompt hierarchy level for the column.

    • In an analytical query or compound dynamart, assign the selected levels of the prompt hierarchy to the columns of the child queries:

      1. In the Transformations pane, double-click Filter to open the Dynamart Filter wizard.

      2. Select Enable filtering.

      3. From the Filter type area, select Prompt Hierarchy Filter. Click Next to open the Assign prompt hierarchy levels to columns page.

      4. Select a column and click the down arrow in the Prompt column to select the prompt hierarchy level for the column.

      5. Click Finish to close the Dynamart Filter wizard.

Note: You can assign a prompt hierarchy to a calculated column that you added to the query.
  8. To edit a prompt hierarchy, select it from the list of available prompts in the Prompts pane and click Edit Prompt.
  9. To delete a prompt hierarchy, select it from the list of available prompts in the Prompts pane and click Delete Prompt.
  10. To update data of the linked prompt hierarchy, select it from the list of available prompts in the Prompts pane and click Refresh linked prompt hierarchy.
  11. To edit the level structure or data source object for the prompt hierarchy, select it in the Prompts pane and click Open in prompt hierarchy editor (Open in prompt hierarchy editor button).
The prompt hierarchy is opened in the Prompt Hierarchy editor.
