Correcting a network problem
This topic covers the procedure used to correct a network problem caused by a hardware failure. Correcting network problems caused by configuration error or traffic overload are beyond the scope of this topic.
About this task
To correct a network problem caused by a hardware failure, perform the following steps.
Procedure
- Verify that all cables are connected to the correct ports on each machine and switch. Do not rely on the color-coding or labeling to identify the cables, because the cables might have been changed from their original configuration. If you cannot determine the endpoints of each cable or the cables are routed through hidden conduits, reconnect all of the cables.
- Verify that all cables are correctly seated and undamaged. Use a commercially available circuit test tool to confirm that the cables are connected correctly. If there are kinks or splits in the cable, replace it with a new one. If there is an excessive tension or twisting on the cable, reseat the cable to remove such problems.
- Replace any other failing hardware components.
