Modeling the process to steps in a workflow
You use the business process and use cases to define the steps in your workflow.
Generally, a business process translates into one workflow for IBM® Product Master, although there are instances when a business process translates logically into several overlapping or synchronous workflows. In addition, not every step in a business process translates into a step within a workflow, because the steps in a Product Master workflow are designed to perform item or object maintenance functions, and a complete business process usually has external business functions, as well.
Workflow complexity and size
Workflows can get very complex in Product Master. They can be used to manage complex business rules. Typical workflows are less than 10 steps in size, but in some implementations, the step number can be in the hundreds and thousands. A workflow with a large number of steps can result in multiple problems ranging from an unmanageable user interface to very slow operations that manage and maintain the workflow, so it should be carefully designed.
One potential approach is to break down a large workflow with many steps into smaller workflows with less steps, which can achieve better performance.
