Old object versions

You can check for old object versions and delete them from your database tables to restore storage space, enhance IBM® Product Master performance, and speed up database utilities.

Versioning is a backup feature for all objects so that you can roll back your objects to a specific object version from within the user interface if you encounter problems. The object versioning process creates duplicate entries in your respective database tables for every new version of your objects.

As an alternative to running the old version maintenance report, you can also run the shell script. For more information, see Checking and deleting old object versions with scripts.

There are two types of versioning:

Implicit versioning
Occurs when the current version of an object is automatically archived as a backup and a new object version is created during a manual item edit, export, or import process.
Explicit versioning
Occurs when you manually request a backup.

Creating duplicate object entries in your database tables results in an increase of the overall size of your database and might cause a performance decrease when you access your objects. You can evaluate how many object versions you stored in your database and determine which version to delete to restore your storage space.

Check for old object versions at least one time every month.
