Editing items in a catalog

You edit an item to provide values for its attributes.

Before you begin

You must search for the items that you want to edit.

About this task

In the catalog attributes, you can specify a spec attribute as the one to be displayed as the item's name. In the new business user interface, what is shows depends on the attribute collections and views. For example, in the new business user interface, the primary and secondary spec attributes included in the selected view are shown in the single edit screen. The display attribute’s value for the item is shown at the top of the screen above the action buttons. The display attribute or primary key attribute is only shown if the selected catalog view includes those attributes in its attribute collections.

Procedure

  1. Expand the catalog module in the left pane navigation to view the list of items.
  2. Click on an item to open in the right pane.
  3. Modify the attributes of the item.
If you have an attribute whose type is string enumeration rule, and whose value is dependent on another attribute, then you must perform the following:
    • In version 6.0.0 and 9.0.0, click Refresh after you make your unsaved changes. The refresh will reflect the changed value in the drop down for the string enumeration.
    • In version 9.0.0 fix pack 2 and later, click the drop down. The string enumeration rule is evaluated using the most up-to-date values of attributes on the client, even those that have not been saved.
Note: In the new business user UI all of the item attributes are rendered in a multi-step process. In the first step only those attributes are rendered that can be accommodated on the screen. The next set of attributes are rendered only if you scroll down. While the rendering of the first set of attributes is very fast, you will notice a slight delay if you need to scroll down to view the next set of item attributes. This slight delay is the normal behavior in the new UI and not a performance issue.
    1. Focus on the attribute field to modify an attribute of the item.
    2. Provide values for the attributes inline in the attribute field for certain attribute types that accept inline input. Alternatively, click on the icon visible towards the right of the attribute field to open a popup editor where available. Provide values and click Ok to accept the changes.
Note: The inline editor in the new UI displays warnings in runtime about input exceeding attribute size for attributes of type String only.
    3. Click Save.
You can also make multiple changes to multiple items. To make changes to a specified attribute across multiple items, which was previously referred to as the "fill-down" capability, you use the copy and paste features in the Collaborative MDM UI:
    1. Select the cell. Ensure that you select the cell itself, not the contents in the cell.
    2. Right-click and choose Copy Cell. Alternatively, use Ctrl+c to copy the contents of the cell.
    3. Select the rows that you want to update the attributes with this data that you just copied. Use standard Windows multi-select options, for example, select a row, then Shift and select the last row in the set.
    4. Right-click and choose Paste. The paste shows you what attribute will be pasted. Alternatively, use Ctrl+v to paste the previously copied contents.
If you are editing through the Single edit pop-up window of the Multi-edit screen, do the following:
    1. Right-click on the attribute field and choose Copy Attribute.
    2. Close the Single edit pop-up window to return to Multi-edit screen.
    3. Select the rows that you want to update the attributes with this data that you just copied. Use standard Windows multi-select options, for example, select a row, then press Shift and select the last row in the set.
    4. Right-click and choose Paste. The paste shows you what attribute will be pasted.
    5. Click Save.
