Changing where categories and items are displayed in the left pane

Using the Use Ordering feature, you can modify the display position of individual items and categories in the left pane. You can use Java APIs and Script APIs to read items or categories that are displayed in the user-defined order.

About this task

By default, any specific display order of items or categories in the left pane is not guaranteed. Using this feature, you can set a customized display order for items or categories in the left pane. The ordering of items and categories is with respect to their parent category. Modifying the display position of individual items and categories to the top of the list reduces scrolling when you have many items and categories but use only a few frequently.
Note: The actual positions of individual items and categories in the list is not changed. They are displayed at different positions as long as the Use Ordering check box in the Catalog Attributes window is selected. If you clear this check box, items and categories are displayed in the order in which they were displayed before you selected the check box.

Procedure

  1. Go to the Catalog Attributes window.
You can go to the Catalog Attributes window either from the catalog console or by right-clicking a catalog in the left pane.
  2. Select the Use Ordering check box from the Catalog Attributes window.
  3. Right-click the item or category that you would like to move to a different position.
  4. Click Cut from the menu.
  5. Right-click the item before which the earlier item needs to be displayed.
  6. Click Insert Before from the menu.
The Insert Before option is enabled because the Use Ordering check box is selected.
  7. Click OK when you are asked to confirm the reordering.
