Process model

When you open your project, you can use the process model area of the Model tab analyze your process. The process model shows the graph representation of your process. By navigating through the activities, relationships between them, and identifying the most frequent paths, you can get more insight into how your process works and how well it performs. You can adjust the model by configuring the model views, view options, filters, and case or process variants. For more information, see Model views, View options, Filters, and Process variants.

You can choose between seeing your process as a NextGen model or a legacy model. To do so, click the eye icon on the tool bar and select the chosen option in the View options pane.

Analyzing the process flow in NextGen models

The process model shows the flow of your process: the activities that are in it and the relationships between them. The following table describes the elements of a process model:

UI element Meaning
Start element The beginning of your process flow.
Rectangle boxes Activities in the process.
Bold text in the box The name of the activity.
Text in the box The role performing the activity.
Number in the box The number reflecting the metric you selected from model views (like frequency, duration, cost). For more information, see Model views.
Donut chart in the box The percentage of the metric you selected from model views (like frequency, duration, cost), compared to the maximum value in the model. For more information on model views, see Model views.
The color of donut chart or the activity box
  • In a single process project, the color represents the metric selected from model views (like frequency, duration, cost). For more information on model views, see Model views.
  • In a multiprocess project, different colors represented particular processes within the project.
You can decide whether you want to see a colored activity box or a colored chart by going to View options > Color filled activities.
Lines and arrows Transitions between the activities.
Bold arrows The most frequent transitions between events.
An arrow that begins and ends at the same activity Self loop, a specific type of rework where the same activity is repeated multiple times without other activities in the middle.
Numbers inside the lines and arrows The number of times the specific process transition occurs.
Stop element The end of your process flow.
Additionally, you can use the following features while analyzing the model:
  • Use the plus button to zoom in, the minus button to zoom out, and the square button to zoom out completely. You can also use your mouse or touchpad to perform these actions.
  • Use the mini map widget to check which part of the process model you are currently viewing.

Viewing detailed activity information in NextGen models

Click on the activity box to see the following detailed information about this activity:
Frequency
How many times the activity appears in the process.
Rework
How many times the activity repeats inside the same case.
Automated instance ratio
The percentage of automation of the activity.
Duration (Average)
The average value of how long it takes to complete the activity.
Duration (Median)
The median value of how long it takes to complete the activity.
Cost
The cost of this single activity.
Overall cost
The cost of all instances of this activity in the process.
Model coverage
The number of possible relationships that are visualized in the process model. The level of relations is adjustable. If the model coverage of an activity is 100%, the current process model shows all possible relationships of this activity.

Analyzing activities in process models

To analyze activities more closely, click on a selected activity and select one of the following options from the menu that appears:
Show activity statistics
By clicking this option, you can view the statistics of a chosen activity. In the Activity statistics window, you can view details for cases filtered by activity, process, resource, or role. For example, you can identify the resources and roles that are involved and the average lead time of the activity.
Important: The visible statistics are for attributes with a cardinality below the threshold. To set this threshold go to Data & Settings > Data > Attributes page.

To see all values of the attribute, select the attribute from the View details for cases by list and click Compute statistics.

Show activity relationships
By clicking this option, you can view the activity relationship for various view modes.
To see the activity relationships in a table, click an activity whose relationship you want to view. In the Activity relationships list, select one of the following options:
  • Select Predecessors to display all incoming relationships of the selected activity.
  • Select Successors to display all the outgoing relationships of the selected activity.
To arrange the data in ascending or descending order, click the corresponding column heading in the table. The table can be sorted by the activity, the number of transitions, average transition time, and median transition time.
Include cases with this activity
By clicking this option, you can add a filter to the process model that includes the cases that are related to the selected activity.
Include cases with reworks on this activity
By clicking this option, you can add a filter to the process model that includes reworked cases of the selected activity. You can use this to display the activities that required a rework.
Note: For some activities, there is an arrow that begins and ends at the same activity. Such self-loop instances occur when an activity is repeated multiple times but passes other activities.
