Getting started
This documentation provides the information that you need to get started with IBM Process Mining and IBM Task Mining.
IBM Process Mining
IBM Process Mining is a process mining solution that automatically discovers and monitors business processes with the goal of optimizing them. Process mining uses business system data to create and visualize an end-to-end process that includes all the involved process activities and process paths. Analyzing the discovered processes can help businesses gain actionable insights for improvement. For more information, see What is IBM Process Mining?.
Installing and setting up the environment
IBM Process Mining can be deployed in multiple ways depending on your needs. Choose the deployment option that best fits your organization's requirements.
IBM Process Mining supports the following installation options:
- On-premises installation
- Install IBM Process Mining in a Linux non-containerized environment. This option provides full control over your deployment and is ideal for organizations with specific security or compliance requirements. For more information, see Installing IBM Process Mining in a Linux non-containerized environment.
- OpenShift Container Platform (OCP) installation
- Deploy IBM Process Mining in a Red Hat® OpenShift® Container Platform environment. This option provides containerized deployment with scalability and integration with other cloud-native services. For more information, see Installing IBM Process Mining in Red Hat® OpenShift® Container Platform (OCP) environment.
- Trial experience
- Try IBM Process Mining at no cost with a 30-day trial or 6-month academic trial. This option provides quick access to a preconfigured environment without installation. For more information, see Trial experience.
Accessing the platform
After installation, you can access IBM Process Mining based on your deployment environment:
- On-premises environment: Access through the URL provided in your welcome email.
- OCP environment: Access through IBM Cloud Paks or the OCP console after subscribing to the service.
- Trial environment: Access through the URL provided in your trial welcome email.
For detailed access instructions, see Accessing IBM Process Mining.
Working with data sources
After installing and accessing IBM Process Mining, you need to create a project with data sources to begin analyzing your processes. IBM Process Mining supports multiple approaches to creating data sources, depending on your analysis needs and available data.
Data source approaches
You can create a project using one of the following approaches:
- Standard event log with process analysis
- Upload an event log containing process execution data with required fields (Process ID, Activity, Start time) and optional fields (End time, Resource, Role, custom fields). This enables full process mining capabilities including process discovery, conformance checking, and performance analysis. You can enhance your analysis by joining the event log with object tables containing master data.
- Dashboards only (no process analysis)
- Upload object tables without an event log to use IBM Process Mining as a business intelligence tool. This approach allows you to build dashboards and visualizations but does not enable process analysis features.
- Simulated process from BPMN
- Generate a synthetic event log from a BPMN (Business Process Model and Notation) model. Configure simulation scenarios including activity probabilities, processing times, workforce availability, and case arrival intervals. The simulated event log can be imported and analyzed like real process data.
For detailed information about each approach, including event log structure requirements, file formats, and step-by-step procedures, see Data sources and Creating a process-mining project.
