Creating investigative reports

You can use Prescriptive Process Mining to investigate processes and create reports for any project that is either created by you or shared with you in IBM Process Mining.

To create, modify, or delete an investigative report, your user account must have the following permissions granted in the Authorizations tab in the Administration section of the application:

  • PPM Report Config
  • PPM Report Delete

For more details about authorizations, see the Authorizations topic.

To investigate a project, complete the following steps:

  1. In the Home page, open Prescriptive Process Mining from the navigation pane.

  2. Select Create a report.
    Create a report button

  3. In the Create a report window, select the project that you want Prescriptive Process Mining to investigate and generate a report.

    Create a report dialog

Prescriptive Process Mining relies on the number of clues in the project to generate meaningful insights. The clues that are available in the project are displayed as colored labels under the columns Default KPIs, Custom KPIs, Additional mapped data, and Conformance check. The clues that are unavailable in the project are displayed as disabled labels.

    1. When process mining is in progress for a project, the Create a report window shows Mining in progress status for the project and you cannot create an investigative report for the project. You must wait until the mining is complete to start the report generation.

    2. If you start process mining for a project which is currently under report generation, the report generation is paused until the mining is complete. {: note} To create a report, you must have at least one end activity configured in the process. For more information about end activities, see the End activities topic.

  4. Click Create report.

Prescriptive Process Mining starts to investigate the project and generate the report. This might take some time to finish. When an investigative report is generated, it is opened automatically for you.

To know more about investigative reports and learn how to interpret the reports, see the Interpreting the reports topic.

Rebuilding reports

When you add or modify any parameter in your project, you must rebuild the report in Prescriptive Process Mining to get the latest results. Prescriptive Process Mining also notifies you when a report rebuild is required.

To rebuild a report, complete the following steps:

  1. Click Rebuild report in the ivestigative report.

    Rebuild report

  2. In the Rebuild report dialog box, enter a name for the new version of the report, and click Build.

    Rebuild report

Additionally, when you rebuild a report, you can choose which KPIs are included in the investigation. To add a KPI in the report, set Add to report corresponding to the KPI to On. To remove a KPI from the report, set Add to report to Off. When you add a KPI to the report, Prescriptive Process Mining calculates its impact and benefit on other KPIs as well.

Rebuild report

When you rebuild a report, the Rebuild report button is replaced by the Stop build button. Click the Stop build any time to stop the report rebuilding.

Configuring reports

You can specify the settings for Prescriptive Process Mining and investigative reports by using the Report settings option.

To configure the investigative reports, complete the following steps:

  1. In the Prescriptive Process Mining reports page, select the Settings icon to open the Report settings page. Report settings button

  2. On the Analysis tab in the Report settings page, specify the report settings as required. For more information on the available settings, see the following table:

    Settings Description
Default time range Specifies the default period in which Prescriptive Process Mining investigates for insights in the project.
Minimum case count Minimum number of cases present in the process within the selected time range (if any) for Prescriptive Process Mining to start the investigation.
Impact threshold (%) Specifies the value at which Prescriptive Process Mining estimates the impact of reducing a nonconforming activity in the process. For more information, see the Assessing the benefits topic.
Minimum precision threshold (%) Specifies the minimum level of precision of insights that are provided in the report.
Dimension occurrence threshold (%) Specifies the minimum frequency of occurrence for activities and attributes to be included in the report.
Activities included in analysis Specifies whether Prescriptive Process Mining investigates all or only nonconforming activities in the process.
Distinct values Specifies the maximum number of distinct values that an attaribute can possess to be included in the report.
Relevance threshold (%) Specifies the minimum percentage of relevance of an activity or attribute on the KPI total to be included in the report.
  3. On the Recommended actions tab, specify the investigation settings as required. For more information on the available settings, see the following table:

    Settings Description
Minimum number of recommended resources Specifies the minimum number of resources Prescriptive Process Mining requires to complete an investigation.
Resource coverage threshold (%) Specifies the minimum percentage of cases in which the resources must be collectively involved.
Prescriptive Process Mining recommends adding resources until their collective involvement reaches this threshold.

Scheduling reports

You can set up Prescriptive Process Mining to generate investigative reports for processes on a schedule based on your requirements. For example, you can schedule the reports to be created periodically or on specific dates. You can also specify whether a report is generated every time a data upload occurs in the process.

To schedule reports, complete the following steps:

  1. In the investigative report, select Schedule report. Schedule report button
  2. On the Schedule tab, select the Schedule type.
    • To generate reports every time a data upload occurs in the process, select Data upload.
    • To generate reports periodically, select Frequency, and specify the frequency as required.
    • To generate reports on specified dates, select Calendar, and specify the dates as required. Schedule reports
  3. On the Service tab, select the preferred notification service.
  4. On the Parameters tab, specify the connection parameters for the service. Then, select Verify connection to check the status of the service.
  5. Click Save to save the report schedule.

If process mining is in progress for the project during its scheduled report generation time, the generated report might not contain the latest results.
