Deploying a virtual machine using existing boot and data volumes

PowerVC images are backed by storage volumes. When an image with volumes is deployed, the virtual machine uses the clone copy of the image volumes. You can now choose to create an image without any volumes attached. While deploying this image, you can select the existing volumes in the Deploy template. This prevents cloning of volumes and avoids any data redundancy.

If you want to deploy an image using existing volumes, follow these steps to create a virtual machine using existing volumes.

  1. From the Images page, click Create.
  2. Specify the operating system type and endianness on the image. The boot disk of the given operating system should be added during deploy later.

For example, if you select RHEL operating system and Big Endian, then make sure to provide a RHEL boot disk while deploying the image.

  3. Click Create.
  4. Select the image in the graphical user interface and select Deploy.
  5. Specify the properties of the new virtual machine as needed. You can use PowerVC resources, such as a storage template, compute template, network, and storage connectivity group to specify custom settings.
  6. Add existing volumes or new (blank) volumes in any order, or remove the volumes as needed. Make sure you add at least one boot volume.
  7. Click Deploy.
A new virtual machine is created with attached volumes that are selected during Deploy.
