Safeguarded Snapshots usage in PowerVC is not supported

PowerVC does not support safeguard snapshot usage.

Explanation

Currently PowerVC Openstack cinder does not support FlashCopy 2.0 volume group technology. PowerVC Openstack cinder uses the legacy FlashCopy mapping to perform clone operations. Hence, if volumes are enabled for safeguarded snapshot outside of PowerVC, the safeguard snapshot feature does not go along with the PowerVC legacy FlashCopy mapping. In this case, operations like clone, snapshot, and live capture might fail.

If legacy way of FlashCopy mapping to clone is used together with the volumes that are enabled for safeguarded snapshot, the following error is seen:
CMMVC9860E The command failed because a volume with snapshots cannot be part of a legacy
Flash Copy mapping as source VDisk.

Solution

In case you want to enable the safeguarded snapshot feature for image volumes outside of PowerVC, create new stand-alone cloned volumes by using the safeguarded snapshot feature. These cloned volumes can then be managed in PowerVC to create a new image.
