Deploy virtual machines without volumes in PowerVC GUI

Starting PowerVC 2.2.0, you can deploy virtual machines (VMs) without any boot volumes on an HMC or NovaLink host that provides you the capability to reserve compute properties. After deploying an empty VM, the VM will be in a SHUT OFF state. You can then attach boot or data volumes to the VM.

Deploying a VM without volumes in PowerVC GUI

To deploy a VM without volumes in the user interface, perform these steps.
  1. In the Image list page, click Create and create an empty image without any volume.
  2. Deploy a VM using this empty image by selecting the image, then clicking Deploy VM in the Images page.

Alternatively, in the Virtual Machines page, click Deploy VM, select the empty image in the Source Image drop-down.

You can also use API to create the VM without volumes. For details, see Deploy VMs without volumes API.
