Introduction to PowerVC for Private Cloud

IBM® PowerVC for Private Cloud (PowerVC for Private Cloud) works with IBM Power® Virtualization Center to provide an end-to-end cloud solution. PowerVC for Private Cloud allows you to provision workloads and manage virtual images.

With PowerVC for Private Cloud, you can perform the following operations, depending on your role within a project. For details about user roles and what each role can do, see Managing roles.

Administrator tasks

Administrators can perform the following tasks:
  • Creating projects and assigning images to projects to give team-specific access to images
  • Setting policies on projects to specify default virtual machine expiration and so on
  • Authorizing users to projects
  • Creating expiration polices to reduce abandoned virtual machines
  • Specifying which actions require approvals and approving requests
  • Creating, editing, and deleting deploy templates
  • Deploying an image from an deploy template
  • Dispositioning requests
  • Performing life cycle operations on virtual machines, such as capture, start, stop, delete, resume, and resize
  • Monitoring usage (metering) data across the project or per user

User tasks

Users can perform the following tasks on resources to which they are authorized. Some actions might require administrator approval. When a user tries to perform a task for which approval is required, the task moves to the request queue before it is performed (or rejected).
  • Performing life cycle operations on virtual machines, such as capture, start, stop, delete, resume, and resize
  • Deploying an image from an deploy template
  • Viewing and withdrawing outstanding requests
  • Requesting virtual machine expiration extension
  • Viewing his or her own usage data
