Configuring PowerVM hosts managed by HMC
The following table summarizes the configuration tasks and requirements for the HMC managed hosts in your environment.
Step | Task | Reference or recommendation |
---|---|---|
1. | Install at least one Virtual I/O Server (VIOS). | Installing the Virtual I/O Server |
2. | Accept the Virtual I/O Server license agreement. | Accepting the Virtual I/O Server license agreement |
3. | Activate the PowerVM Enterprise Edition or the PowerVM for IBM PowerLinux hardware feature. | Entering the PowerVM Editions activation code |
4. | Create a Shared Ethernet Adapter. | Configuring a
Shared Ethernet Adapter The Shared Ethernet Adapter must be backed by a single adapter or by a link aggregation. It must have a single primary virtual Ethernet adapter. |
5. | Change the maximum number of virtual resources. | Changing the maximum number of virtual
resources It is recommended that you have at least 200 virtual resources available on the host for use by the Virtual I/O Server. This number enables you to have sufficient resources available on your hosts as you create and migrate virtual machines throughout your environment. |
6. | Change the logical-memory block size setting. | Changing the
logical-memory block size If you plan to migrate virtual machines, then the logical-memory block size should be the same on all of the hosts in your environment. |
7. | Create a virtual machine. If you already have a vSCSI-enabled virtual machine, you can add it to PowerVC instead. | Creating an image from ISO You must create a virtual machine before you can manage and capture it for deployment in PowerVC. After creation, you can manage and capture it for deployment in PowerVC. |
