Slot descriptions for the 9080-M9S

The 9080-M9S systems provide eight low-profile (half-height, half-length) PCIe4 slots. All slots support Enhanced Error Handling (EEH) and can be serviced with the system power turned on. The PCIe slots are also enabled to support the PCIe3 cable adapter (FC EJ07 or FC EJ19) that is used to attach the EMX0 PCIe Gen3 I/O expansion drawer.

Firmware slot capabilities

System PCIe slots are allocated direct memory access (DMA) space using the following algorithm:
  • All slots are allocated a 2 GB default DMA window.
  • All I/O adapter slots (except the embedded USB) are allocated Dynamic DMA Window (DDW) capability based on installed platform memory. DDW capability is calculated assuming 4K I/O mappings:
    • For systems with less than 64 GB of memory, slots are allocated 16 GB of DDW capability.
    • For systems with at least 64 GB of memory, but less than 128 GB of memory, slots are allocated 32 GB of DDW capability.
    • For systems with 128 GB or more of memory, slots are allocated 64 GB of DDW capability.
    • Slots can be enabled with Huge Dynamic DMA Window capability (HDDW) using the I/O Adapter Enlarged Capacity setting in ASMI.
    • HDDW enabled slots are allocated enough DDW capability to map all of installed platform memory using 64 K I/O mappings.
    • Minimum DMA window size for HDDW enabled slots is 32 GB.
    • Slots that are HDDW enabled are allocated the larger of the calculated DDW capability and HDDW capability.

Adapter placement rules

Use this information while selecting slots for installing adapters in the 9080-M9S. Use Table 2 to identify adapter slot placement priorities and maximums for the system.
  • All of the PCIe slots are Generation4 (Gen4) and low-profile (Half-height, Half-length). The slots also support Gen1 to Gen3 adapters.
  • IBM recommends that adapters that do not require high bandwidth be placed in an EMX0 PCIe3 expansion drawer. Populating a low latency, high-bandwidth slot with a low-bandwidth adapter is not the best use of system resources. From a system resource perspective, the best location for a low-bandwidth adapter is in a PCIe slot within the EMX0 PCIe3 expansion drawer.
  • IBM custom adapters, like the PCIe3 cable adapter for the EMX0 PCIe3 expansion drawer (FC EJ07 or FC EJ19), can violate the 1/2 tall rule but cannot be full adapter height. If a custom adapter is to be considered, the physical height constraint needs to be determined. The PCIe3 cable adapter for the EMX0 PCIe3 expansion drawer (FC EJ07 or FC EJ19) is designed to enable connection to IBM I/O drawers.
  • Currently, no adapter can dissipate more than 25 watts. Special considerations are needed to exceed this limit.
  • IBM recommends using the high-profile version of all adapters whenever the system includes an EMX0 PCIe3 expansion drawer. This allows the user to place most of the adapters within the EMX0 PCIe3 expansion drawer. It is advised to use node slots for the PCIe3 cable adapters only.
  • Coherent Accelerator Processor Interface (CAPI) cards are supported in all of the PCIe slots.

Verify whether the adapter is supported for your system. The feature code (FC) column in the table below lists all of the supported adapters for these systems. For more details about individual adapters, click the adapter FC. The 9080-M9S systems can have two or four system processor modules.

Note: In the following table, the slot priority numbers 1 - 8 correspond to slot locations P1-C1-C1 through P1-C8-C1.
