Installing the system

You might need to install the system into the rack. Use the procedure in this section to perform this task. This section also includes illustrations of the related hardware components and shows how these components relate to each other.

To install the system into a rack, complete the following steps:

  1. If you are installing a 5790 or 7311-D11 expansion unit into the rack, slide the unit in from the back of the shell. If you are installing a 5796 or 7314-G30 expansion unit into the rack, slide the unit in from the front of the shell.
    Important: If installing the 7314-G30 or 5796 first remove the front and back shipping covers. These shipping covers are secured by four thumb screws each. Two screws are located on the top of the cover and two are located on the sides of the cover.

  2. If you are installing a 5790 drawer (D) into an existing shell (C), remove the two filler plate screws (A) and the filler plate (B).
    Note: Your shell may have one or two filler plates. If there is a filler plate where you want to install your drawer, you need to remove the filler plate.

  3. If you are installing a 5790, slide the drawer (D) into the shell, as shown in Figure 2.
  4. If you are installing a 5790, install and tighten the two drawer screws (E), securing the drawer to the shell as shown in Figure 2.
  5. If you are installing a 5796 drawer (H) into an existing shell (G), remove the filler plate (F) by pressing down the tops tabs and pulling it out.
    Note: Your shell may have one or two filler plates. If there is a filler plate where you want to install your drawer, you need to remove the filler plate.

  6. Carefully move any existing cables that are blocking the drawer location.
  7. If you are installing a 5796, slide the drawer (H) into the shell, as shown in Figure 3.
  8. If you are installing a 5796, use a thumb screw (I) to install the cable retention bracket (J).
  9. If you are installing two drawers, repeat the steps to install the second drawer. If there is only one drawer installed in the shell, ensure that the filler plate is installed in the blank slot.
  10. To install the filler plate (K) beside a 5790, place the filler plate into the blank slot in the shell (M). Fasten the filler plate with two filler plate screws (L).

    To install the filler plate (N) beside a 5796 in the blank slot in the shell, slide the filler plate up under the top tab and gently push the filler plate into place.

  11. Attach the front cover. See Installing the front cover on a 7311-D11, 5791, or 5794 expansion unit or Installing the front cover on the 7314-G30 or 5796.
