Step 1. Cabling the Operations Console to your server

Learn how to connect your Operations Console PC to your server.

Important: If you have an IBM® Power 520 Express™, IBM Power 550 Express, IBM Power 570, or IBM Power 575 and were directed here from the installation instructions, you must set the altitude setting before returning to the installation instructions.

Before you cable your server with Operations Console, determine the type of connection you will be using. You can either attach an Ethernet cable or a serial Operations Console cable.

Note: If you are changing the console device, the server value QAUTOCFG must be set to ON. Use one of the following options to verify or set this system value on the server:
  • Use the WRKSYSVAL QAUTOCFG IBM i command.
  • During a manual initial program load (IPL) in the IPL Options window, for Set major system options, select Y. Then for Enable automatic configuration, select Y.
DANGER
When working on or around the system, observe the following precautions:
Electrical voltage and current from power, telephone, and communication cables are hazardous. To avoid a shock hazard:
  • Connect power to this unit only with the IBM provided power cord. Do not use the IBM provided power cord for any other product.
  • Do not open or service any power supply assembly.
  • Do not connect or disconnect any cables or perform installation, maintenance, or reconfiguration of this product during an electrical storm.
  • The product might be equipped with multiple power cords. To remove all hazardous voltages, disconnect all power cords.
  • Connect all power cords to a properly wired and grounded electrical outlet. Ensure that the outlet supplies proper voltage and phase rotation according to the system rating plate.
  • Connect any equipment that will be attached to this product to properly wired outlets.
  • When possible, use one hand only to connect or disconnect signal cables.
  • Never turn on any equipment when there is evidence of fire, water, or structural damage.
  • Disconnect the attached power cords, telecommunications systems, networks, and modems before you open the device covers, unless instructed otherwise in the installation and configuration procedures.
  • Connect and disconnect cables as described in the following procedures when installing, moving, or opening covers on this product or attached devices.
    To Disconnect:
    1. Turn off everything (unless instructed otherwise).
    2. Remove the power cords from the outlets.
    3. Remove the signal cables from the connectors.
    4. Remove all cables from the devices
    To Connect:
    1. Turn off everything (unless instructed otherwise).
    2. Attach all cables to the devices.
    3. Attach the signal cables to the connectors.
    4. Attach the power cords to the outlets.
    5. Turn on the devices.

Important: The server must be powered off. Do not power on the server until you are instructed to do so.

The following steps assume you have already set up the PCs that are connecting to the system. You can also use these steps if you are removing one or more cables from your PC, server, or both.

Note: If you do not have your PC set up to connect to the system, set up your PC using the PC user's manual.

To connect the Ethernet cable or Operations Console serial cable

To connect the Ethernet cable or Operations Console serial cable, complete one of the following steps:
  1. If you are using a LAN connection, attach an Ethernet cable from the PC to the LAN, and another Ethernet cable from the LAN to the top Ethernet port on the server (labeled T1).
  2. If you are using a direct attach connection using the Operations Console serial cable, perform the following steps:
    1. Shut down and unplug the PC that will serve as the system console.
    2. Connect the Operations Console serial cable (97H7557 or 39J5835) to the serial port (also called COM port or joystick port) on the back of the PC to the matching serial port on the back of your server.
Note: If you are using the 2742 adapter, the Operations Console cable must be attached to the lower connector.

To cable the twinaxial console

  1. On the rear of the expansion unit, locate the position that contains adapter 2746. This is your twinaxial adapter.
  2. Locate the 8-port twinaxial attachment cable (part number 21F5093), and attach it to the connector on the 2746 twinaxial adapter.
  3. Connect a twinaxial cable from the workstation that you will use as the system console to port 0 on the 8-port twinaxial attachment cable.
    Notes:
    1. The workstation address of your console must be set to 0. To set the address, see the reference information that was included with your workstation.
    2. The twinaxial input/output adapter (IOA) requires an input/output processor (IOP) to function. You must have an expansion unit for the IOA and IOP. You also must have a Hardware Management Console (HMC) to access and tag the resources in the expansion unit to assign a console.
