Changing the autocreate service tools device ID

By default, the system manages service tools device IDs automatically. However, if necessary, you can either turn off this function or increase the value for the number of automatically created service tools device IDs.

You can only access the option using dedicated service tools (DST).

To change the autocreate service tools device ID, follow these steps:

  1. Access dedicated service tools (DST).
  2. Select Work with DST environment.
  3. Select Service tools security data.
  4. Perform one of the following:
    • To change the value of the option Autocreate service tools device IDs, enter a value 1 - 49.
    • To turn off the autocreate service tools device IDs function, enter a value of 0.
  5. Move the cursor to the input line at the bottom, select the option for Autocreate service tools device IDs, and press Enter.
Note: The default RCP privilege on autocreate device IDs is revoked. This is to maintain system security. If you want the RCP default privilege to be granted, you must install IBM® i 6.1 PTFs MF45631 and MF45999. Then the secauditlog macro can be used to change the autocreate device IDs RCP default privilege. For more information, see Concepts for remote and virtual control panels.

Setting the RCP privilege using SST

These instructions require a workstation capable of using the system service tools (SST).

To perform this procedure, you will need a workstation capable of using the system service tools (SST).

You can use the IBM i system support tool (SST) to change the remote control panel (RCP) privileges to on or off after installing the IBM i 6.1 PTFs MF45631 and MF45999.

Important: Incorrect use of local macros can result in a change requiring a complete system reload.

To use the secauditlog local macro support, follow these steps:

  1. Access service tools using SST.
  2. Select Start a service tool > Display/Alter/Dump > Display/Alter storage.
  3. Select Advanced analysis. If necessary, page down to see this option.
  4. Type a 1 next to the option FLIGHTLOG and press Enter. The Specify Advanced Analysis Options window is displayed and the command displays as FLIGHTLOG.
  5. Select the SEC option and one of the parameters below in the Options field.
    • Grant RCP privilege to autocreate device IDs = RCPON
    • Do not grant RCP privilege to autocreate device IDs = RCPOFF
