Starting the system management services

To start the SMS, select one of the options below, depending on whether the system is partitioned or nonpartitioned.

• If you have a partitioned system, complete one of the following tasks:
  Requirement: The logical partition must be shut down.
  • Using the Hardware Management Console (HMC), activate the logical partition. (If a VTERM on the HMC is the firmware console for the partition that is being restarted, open the VTERM.)
  • Using version 6 or earlier of the HMC, change the partition profile properties.
    1. In the navigation area, open Server and Partition.
    2. Select Server Management.
    3. In the contents area, open the server on which the partition profile is located.
    4. Open Partitions.
    5. Open the logical partition for the partition profile.
    6. Right-click the partition profile and select Properties.
    7. Click the Settings tab and change the boot mode to System Management Services (SMS).
    8. Click OK.
    9. Activate the logical partition.

       The system will reboot into the SMS menus.

  • Using version 7 or later of the HMC, change the partition profile properties.
    1. In the navigation area, click Systems Management.
    2. In the navigation area, click Servers.
    3. In the navigation area, select the managed system that you want.
    4. In the contents area, select the logical partition that you want.
    5. Click Tasks > Operations > Activate.
    6. Click Advanced... on the Activate Logical Partition window.
    7. Select Normal in the Keylock position field and select SMS in the Boot mode field.
    8. Click OK.
    9. If you want a console for this session, select Open a terminal window or console session, and the click OK.

       The system will reboot into the SMS menus.

• If you have a nonpartitioned system, complete one of the following tasks:
  • If the ASMI is available on a network-attached console and the system is in standby, complete the following steps:
    1. On the ASMI Welcome window, specify your user ID and password, and click Log In.
    2. In the navigation area, expand Power/Restart Control and select Power On/Off System.
    3. Select AIX/Linux Partition Mode Boot, and then select Boot to SMS Menu.
    4. Click Save settings and power on. All selected options are saved and the system turns on.
       Remember: The system will always boot to the SMS menus after you click Save settings and power on. To change this setting at a later time, repeat these steps and select a different option for AIX/Linux Partition Mode Boot.
  • If the ASMI is not available and the system is in standby, complete the following steps:
    Note: Follow these steps if you have a model 7037-A50 or model 7047-185 and the system is powered off.
    1. Press the power button on the control panel.
    2. Look for the POST indicators memory, keyboard, network, scsi, speaker, which display across the bottom of the firmware console.
    3. Press the numeric 1 key after the word keyboard is displayed and before the word speaker is displayed.
  • If the ASMI is not available and the system has already booted the operating system, complete the following steps:
    1. Reboot the operating system.
    2. Look for the POST indicators memory, keyboard, network, scsi, speaker, which display across the bottom of the firmware console.
    3. Press the numeric 1 key after the word keyboard is displayed and before the word speaker is displayed.
