Hardware considerations for data migration planning

Learn what the hardware requirements are prior to performing your data migration.

To plan for hardware, perform the following tasks:

  1. Order the target server with feature code 0205 or prepare your target server or logical partition.

This feature code ensures that the target server is set up for the data migration and entitles you to run the new operating system on both the source and target servers for a maximum of 70 days so that you can complete the data migration. However, ensure that you reinstall the previous operating system on the source server after the data migration is complete. Failing to reinstall the previous operating system is a license infringement.

  2. Identify the hardware requirements for your data migration. See Hardware specification sheets for more information.
  3. Identify any tape incompatibilities.

Ensure that you have a tape drive and format that is compatible with the tape drive attached to the target server. To determine if your tape drive is compatible, see the Storage Solutions(http://www-1.ibm.com/servers/eserver/iseries/hardware/storage/) Web site Link outside Information Center or the System Handbook Link outside Information Center (http://www.redbooks.ibm.com/pubs/pdfs/redbooks/ga195486.pdf). To learn more about tape devices, see the Tape topic.

  4. Ensure that you have a physical plan for the target server.

The target server will be set up and running beside the source server for a period of time. There are physical planning and setup implications that pertain to the target server.
