Upgrade paths

Learn which upgrade paths are available for your current server.

You can upgrade to the IBM® eServer™ i5 models by using any of the following paths:

• System i® model 810 to IBM System i5® or eServer i5 model
• System i model 825 to IBM eServer i5 model
• System i model 830 to IBM eServer i5 model
• System i model 840 to IBM eServer i5 model
• System i model 870 to IBM System i5 or eServer i5 model
• System i model 890 to IBM System i5 or eServer i5 model
• IBM eServer i5 model 520 to IBM System i5 model

If there is not a direct upgrade path from your existing model to a new IBM System i5 or eServer i5 model, you can migrate the data from your server to a new model. For information on migrating your data to a new server, see the Data migration topic.

You can upgrade the capacity of select models without upgrading to a new model simply by activating one or more standby processors on that server. Before you can upgrade your server, all of the processors on that server might have to be activated. For more information, see Working with Capacity Upgrade on Demand.
