Preparing the 9043-MRX system for operation after removing and replacing the eBMC card assembly
To prepare the system for operation after you replace the service processor card assembly, complete the steps in this procedure.
Procedure
- Ensure that you have the electrostatic discharge (ESD) wrist strap on and that the ESD clip is plugged into a ground jack or connected to an unpainted metal surface. If not, do so now.
-
If you removed the power cords, use your labels to reconnect the power cords to the system unit.
Fasten the power cords to the system by using the hook-and-loop fasteners.
Figure 1. Connecting the power cords
- If removed, reconnect the Ethernet, serial, and Universal Serial Bus (USB) cables.
- To determine the IP address of the new eBMC card,
complete the following steps:
- Use the control panel display to set the system operating mode to manual operating
mode.
- Use the Increment or Decrement buttons to scroll to function 02 on the control panel display. Then, press the enter button.
- Do not change the OS IPL type. Press the enter button.
- Use the Increment or Decrement buttons to select manual operating mode. Then, press the enter button.
- Do not change the firmware IPL mode. Press the enter button to exit function 02.
- Use the control panel display to determine the IP address of the new eBMC card.
- Use the Increment or Decrement buttons to scroll to function 30 on the control panel display. Then, press the enter button.
- Use the Increment or Decrement buttons to select 3000. Then, press the enter button to display the IP address of ETH0. Record the IP address.
- Use the Increment or Decrement buttons to select 3001. Then, press the enter button to display the IP address of ETH1. Record the IP address.
- Use the Increment or Decrement buttons to select 30**. Then, press the enter button to exit function 30.
- Use the control panel display to set the system operating mode to manual operating
mode.
- To set the static IP address of the new eBMC card,
complete the following steps:
- Connect the eBMC card to the device that will be used to access the ASMI by using an Ethernet cable or a USB cable.
- Log in to the eBMC card by using the IP address that you recorded in the previous
step. Notes:
- Use the default user ID and password to log in. Then, restore the user ID and password that you recorded before you replaced the eBMC card.
- For more information about setting IP addresses, see Setting the IP address on your PC or notebook (www.ibm.com/docs/en/POWER10/p10hby/asmiipaddress.htm).
- Use the ASMI to restore the eBMC card IP address to the setting that you recorded before you replaced the eBMC card.
- If you disconnected the eBMC card from the network or HMC in a previous step, reconnect the eBMC card to the network or HMC.
- Access the Advanced System Management Interface (ASMI).
For instructions, see Logging on to the ASMI GUI.
- To check for a
BD554001orBD554008reference code by using the ASMI, complete the following steps:- In the navigation area of the ASMI, click Logs > Event Logs.
- If a
BD554001orBD554008reference code is displayed in the error and event log list, contact your next level of support to restore system vital product data settings.
-
Use the ASMI to restore any eBMC settings that you recorded earlier. Settings that might need to be restored include the following settings:
- Power
- Server power operations
- Memory
- Field core override
- Lateral cast out control
- Date and time
- Network configuration
- Power restore policy
- SNMP alerts
- Account data (including all changed passwords)
- LDAP configurations
- Security policies
For more information about eBMC settings, see Managing the system by using the ASMI GUI (www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/POWER10/p10eih/p10eih_ebmc_gui.htm).
- If the system was powered off, reset the time-of-day settings by
using the ASMI. To set the time-of-day, complete the following steps:
- In the navigation area of the ASMI, click Settings > Date and time.
- The content pane displays the current date (month, day, and year) and time (hours, minutes, and seconds).
- If the settings are not correct, change the date, the time, or both.
- Use the ASMI to ensure that the new eBMC card assembly has the same level of firmware as
the original eBMC card assembly.
- In the navigation area of the ASMI, click Overview > Firmware information.
- The text that is displayed under Running indicates the current firmware level.
- If the eBMC card assembly that you just replaced has a different firmware level than what you recorded earlier, you must install the original firmware level on the new card. See Getting firmware fixes and use the USB port method to install the firmware. Then, return to this procedure and continue with the next step.
- Start the system. For instructions, see Starting a system.
- Turn off the identify LED. For instructions, see Deactivating an identify LED.
- If necessary, have the system administrator recover logical partitions.
- Use the ASMI to restore the asset tag setting for the
system.
- In the navigation area of the ASMI, click Overview.
- Restore the asset tag setting that you recorded earlier.
-
Verify the installed part.
- If you replaced the part because of a service action, verify the installed part. For instructions, see Verifying a repair.
- If you installed the part for any other reason, verify the installed part. For instructions, see Verifying the installed part.
