Selector

Use the Selector visualization to pick members, sets, or levels for a view (either in exploration or visualization).

The selector widget can have multiple selectors with the same hierarchy that lets you pick members from different groups to form a set and supports one-way synchronization. The multiple selector feature in the selector lets you easily compare members, view data for a range of members, or create a multiple selection list.

When a selector is synchronized with a view, the selection of a member, set, or level in the selector is applied to the view.

For more information on how to create and use selector widgets, see Create a Selector visualization to manage views.

Adding a selector widget

You can add selector widgets from an exploration. Simply drag and drop the dimension that you want to use to create a Selector, to an empty space in the book. Or, you can follow these steps to create a Selector widget from an exploration row, column, or context area. Keep in mind, you cannot create a Selector from benched dimensions.

  1. In Edit mode, click the menu icon next to the dimension you want to create a selector widget from.
  2. Click either Add selector tile or Add selector list and select the tile or list type. You can add the following types of selectors to your book:
    • single tile
    • selector with multiple tiles
    • selector with range selection tile
    • single list
    • selector with multiple lists
    • selector with multiple selection option
Note: The range selection tile and multiple selection list selector types can only send synchronization events. They don't receive synchronization events.
You can add a selector from the Data tree. In the Data tree, fully expand the Dimensions node under the cube from which you want to create a selector widget. Click either Add selector tile or Add selector list and select the tile or list type.
Note: You can create a selector only from the Dimensions node under a cube. You can't create a selector from the main Dimensions node.

You can also add a Selector to your book from the Visualizations pane.

After you add a selector widget to your book, you can customize the widget in its appearance, layout, selection methods, and choose when selection changes apply to the synchronization group.

Custom properties of a selector widget

You can tailor the Selector widget for your purposes.

Custom properties for a selector
Apply selections

You can toggle if the change in one selection applies to its synchronization group immediately or changes from multiple selectors apply in a batch. Enable the In batch property if you want changes from multiple selectors to apply in a batch and only when the Apply button in the widget is pressed. Otherwise, any change in a member selection applies as soon as the change occurs.

Select Show as range selector if you want to see a range of members. The two selected members in the selector act as the first and last members of the member list.
Important: The Show as range selector property works only when you have a maximum of two selectors in a selector widget.

In the following example, both the In batch and Show as range selector properties are enabled. When you change the member selections to 2 Quarter and 4 Quarter in the first and second selectors, the view updates to display all the members between 2 Quarter and 4 Quarter.

Range selection synchronization in selectors
Enable Multiple selection list to display the selector widget as a list, which allows multiple member selections.
Layout
In the Layout section, you can select whether you want the selector widget to display horizontally or vertically and you can restore the widget to its default size.
You can also select the number of selectors that display in a selector widget. You can choose between two to four selectors. By default, selector widgets contain two selectors.
Selector titles
You can specify the title for each selector in a selector widget.
Selector style
Much like the custom properties of the selector widget, under the Selector style section, you can display a selector widget as a simple list, expand and collapse the widget, show the search bar, and much more.
