Data coherency

In IBM® Planning Analytics for Microsoft Excel, data is considered coherent if the data in your workbook is in sync with the data saved in the datasource. If you use partially scoped refresh gestures, you may have situations where your workbook is not fully coherent. This topic will take you through some of the scenarios where your workbook may or may not be coherent, as well as explain some of the terms related to data coherency.

Total data coherency
There is total data coherency if the data in your workbook is in sync with the data saved in the datasource. The goal of total data coherency is to ensure that the entire reporting content of the workbook is consistent with the data in the datasource.
Partial data coherency

There is partial data coherency if some of the data in your workbook differs from the data saved in the datasource. Your workbook can have partial data coherency if you are editing cells or modifying the workbook and have not yet committed your changes to the datasource. Partial data coherency can also occur if the data in the datasource changes and you have not refreshed your workbook to reflect the changes, or have refreshed only a part of your workbook.

Partial data coherency is also likely to occur if you employ Constrained Calculations. For more information on Constrained Calculations, see Constrained Calculations.

"Dirty" data
Spreadsheet content is flagged as "dirty" by the Excel runtime whenever you make any changes, such as editing cells or modifying the workbook. Data in a worksheet may also be flagged as dirty if it has dependencies on calculations in another worksheet. If the calculations are changed or recalculated, but the data in the worksheet is not recalculated, the data is flagged as dirty.
"Clean" data
The dirty flag is cleared by the Excel runtime when the relevant spreadsheet content if finally calculated, and if there are no outstanding recalculations that need to be performed.
Calculation Options
If your Calculation Options in Microsoft Excel is set to Manual, you may observe a "CALCULATE" message in the Microsoft Excel status bar. The "CALCULATE" message appears if there is any active content that is still flagged as dirty.
If your Calculation Options in Microsoft Excel is set to Automatic, Microsoft Excel will attempt to recalculate any dirty content whenever it is encountered.
